Overview

"Everybody Needs Salvation" is a reworking of a previous demo, "Let's Go to the 33rd Dimension". Demos of both songs were included in the digital compilation Alone XI: The EWBAITE Years, released in 2020.

The song was only released on 7" one-sided red vinyl, with a digital MP3 download of the track for members of the fan club. The 7" features no B-side, meaning this side of the single is smooth. The song was recorded in February 2015, several months after the sessions for their most recent album Everything Will Be Alright in the End, but a version of the song was written prior to and considered for the album at one point. A portion of the bridge lyrics appear in the album liner notes after the lyrics for "The British Are Coming".

At a Nerd Night in 2015 Rivers told a fan that the song was picked for the fan club single because it was "something different." Cuomo also said that he personally chose the cover.

The cover is a painting by Antonello da Messina called Ecce Homo, painted in 1475. The symbol on the shoulder of Christ is the Om in Devanagari[1]. The cover the original intended cover for Ecce Homo, the album concept that was eventually reworked into Everything Will Be Alright in the End.

Lyrics

Meet me in the dark
My heart shrivels when the light is shining
I can't get back home alone
I need someone here to guide me
Praise for the awakened one
He truly saved my life
But after all his truth is small
And I love the lie

Everybody needs salvation
And if it doesn't come we make some
Some people can get by on nothing
But I still need to know I'm something

Just like in a dream I scream
But no one hears a word I'm saying
Have I lost my mind this time
Or have I won the game we're playing
That's all I really care about (care about)
It's kind of wonderful
Kiss me while we both are still intangible

Everybody needs salvation
And if it doesn't come we make some
Some people can get by on nothing
But I still need to know I'm something
Yes I still need to know I'm something

I'm ready to love you
I'm ready to give my heart
I'm ready to trust you
Cause I ain't afraid of the dark

I'm ready to love you
I'm ready to give my heart
I'm ready to trust you
Cause I ain't afraid (I ain't afraid)
I ain't afraid of the dark

Everybody needs salvation
And if it doesn't come we make some
Some people can get by on nothing
But I still need to know I'm something

Ecce Homo

Keep me in the dark
My heart shrivels when the light is shining
Hitch and Dawkins bitch
I switch and join those Kids in Satan’s Army
Praise for the awakened one
He truly saved my life
But after all his truth is small
And I love the lie

Everybody needs salvation
And if it doesn’t come we make some
Some people can get by on nothing
But I still need to know I’m something

So how do we explain Yngwie
Or Abba and don’t forget Max Martin
Do I have to be Messi,
And cross myself when I knock the cross in
That’s all I really care about
It’s kind of practical
Excuse me while I light this scented candle

I’m ready to love you
I’m ready to give my heart
I’m ready to trust you
Cause I’m ain’t afraid of the dark
