Overview

"Freedom Is So Painful" was demoed acoustically at the band's rented office space in 2003, as a potential track for the band's planned fifth album. The song was one of hundreds of demos leaked onto riverscuomo.com on November 7, 2020. A few days later, on November 11, the song was listed and quickly sold to a user on the site's demo storefront, where it was thereafter shared among fans. The song was soon after released on November 22 as part of the digital compilation Alone IX: The Make Believe Years.

Lyrics

I have to let you go out there on your own
I have to let you fly and find your home

It hurts me so much to release you
But I know that I should not keep you
We both have our lives to be living
And there is nothing more to be giving

Freedom is so painful
Freedom is so painful
Freedom rings

I wish you all the best in whatever you do
And that all great success will wind its way to you
I will be doing my own thing
Don't you ever worry about me
I'll try my best to forget you
That's what we both should try to do

Freedom is so painful
Freedom is so painful
Freedom rings

It hurts me so much to release you
But I know that I should not keep you
We both have our lives to be living
And there is nothing more to be giving

And freedom is so painful
Freedom, it's so painful
Freedom is so painful
Freedom rings
