Appearances

Overview

"V. Carlton" was demoed by Cuomo in 2004 at SIR rehearsal studio during pre-production on Make Believe. The song, under the title "How Was I to Know" was ultimately listed as a "Non A-List Contender" in July of that year. The song is not known to have been attempted as a band. Curiously, the Recording History lists "V. Carlton" as a "cover of an unknown Vanessa Carlton song", but lists "How Was I to Know" with a Catalog O' Riffs number (618), implying that it was composed by Cuomo. The filename of the MP3 of "V. Carlton" in fan circulation also bears the COR number 618.

The song was first heard by fans on November 7, 2020, as one of hundreds of demos inadvertently leaked through the demo storefront on riverscuomo.com. The song was subsequently sold through the storefront on November 11, whereupon it was made available to other users by the user who purchased it. The song was later made available for purchase as part of the digital compilation Alone IX: The Make Believe Years on November 22, before being removed on November 29 for as-of-yet unknown reasons.

Lyrics

I soon forget the times I haven't heard before
I don't remember that I should lock up my door
And there you go with all your oh-so-charming ways
And I can't help but follow you into the maze

You came around without warning
How was I to know that you would own me
You came around with your sweet kiss
How was I to know that I would need this

And I expected you to quickly leave my mind
But here I am still thinking of you all the time
I know it isn't good for me to love you so
But I am stuck on you, I just can't let you go

You came around without warning (without warning, baby)
How was I to know that you would own me (you would own me, baby)
You came around with your sweetness (with your sweetness, baby)
How was I to know that I would need this (I would need this, baby)

I would die for you (die, die for you)
I would die for you (die, die for you)

You came around without warning (without warning, baby)
How was I to know that you would own me (you would own me, baby)
You came around with your sweetness (with your sweetness, baby)
How was I to know that I would need this (I would need this, baby)
