2011/09/11 Dana Point, CA: Doheny State Beach: Doheny Days Festival

Today is the second day of the 2 day Doheny Days Festival, and Weezer is closing the show tonight, following sets by the likes of Cake, Neon Trees, Ziggy Marley and Black Uhuru! This show is bound to be a good one, set up right on the beautiful Doheny State Beach by the Pacific Ocean.

Ten Years

Ten years ago, I was woken up in a hotel room in San Jose, CA by a phone call from my friend Patrick Finn, who was hysterical and telling me to turn on my TV. Like everyone else that day Weezer's world took a sharp and strange detour as the events of 9/11 changed everything. No one knew what to do or what would happen, and as the enormity of the day's events and what it meant sunk in, the tour we were just about to embark on seemed pretty unimportant. After several cancelled shows and a lot of confusion, eventually the Midget Tour picked up steam and moved ahead, just like everyone had to, despite the shock of the attacks.

Later in September weezer played a cold rainy set at Jones Beach in NYC, a show we initially were sure would be cancelled. Theres not a lot a rock band can do to help process acts of terror or natural disasters - but in rocking out for the fans, some sense of normalcy and comfort was achieved, and the fans were very glad the show went on. The day after the show I stayed on in NYC for a few days with the Finns on a trip that was planned well before 9/11. It felt very strange trying to have a "normal" vacation so soon after the attacks, but it also felt wrong to cancel. We saw the spontaneous memorials that had sprung up all over lower Manhattan, and we got as close to the WTC site as we could and stood speechless for a while. Now, every time I return to NYC, I make a special effort to walk down there and have a little visit with the past and the future.
