Overview

The song's existence first became known to fans in 2019 when its title appeared in a list of notes written by an A&R assistant about various songs demoed in contention for the album that would eventually become Everything Will Be Alright in the End.

On May 22, 2020, Cuomo hosted an Island in the Zoom video conference with screenwriter Yalun Tu as the special guest, wherein Tu explained that he and Cuomo were working on a pitch for a TV series in which Cuomo would play a fictionalized version of himself, who performs with Weezer and lives as a family man while also secretly being an alien from outer space. On October 23 of that year, while simultaneously streaming to Instagram and TikTok, Cuomo recorded his segment of the pitch, which included a performance of "Simple to Me", featuring lyrics alluding to being a martian.

Several demos of "Simple to Me" were added to the digital compilation Alone XI: The EWBAITE Years on November 22, 2020, though some of these (specifically the ones based around the "martian" conceit) were removed by Cuomo shortly thereafter.
