"Thrown It All Away" (or "I've Thrown It All Away") is a hidden track from the vinyl release of Van Weezer. The song was originally written in 1993 by Rivers Cuomo, Patrick Wilson, and Jason Cropper.

Appearances

Overview

"Thrown It All Away" was originally recorded by Pat Wilson, who initially recorded versions of the song with only drums and bass to 4-track, with an additional version thereafter recorded using a Yamaha workstation.[1] Rivers Cuomo recorded a demo of the song in February of 1993, later including it in the demo cassette tape Monterey Jack. The song's lyrics purportedly describe Cuomo's feelings of sadness about moving out of his parents' home.[2] The song's title (rendered as "Thrown It All Away"), initially appeared in the spreadsheet "The 4 and 5 Star Demos of Rivers Cuomo", posted by Cuomo to riverscuomo.com in 2008, where it was noted for inclusion on Alone II. The song did not appear on Alone II.

In a 2008 interview, Karl Koch described the song as being one that fans "needed to hear."[3]

On April 10, 2020, Cuomo mentioned that there would be a Homie song on Van Weezer, as well as a bonus track originally written around 1992.[4] On April 14, Cuomo sang a small segment of the aforementioned bonus track (later confirmed to be "Thrown It All Away") during a webinar with fans hosted by Cuomo on the video platform Zoom, for which co-writer Jason Cropper was present.[5] On September 2, Cuomo confirmed via a Riverpedia entry that the 1992 song "Thrown It All Away" had recently been recorded with the band. Cuomo later added on September 4 that he "originally co-wrote it in the '90s with Pat and Jason." The article was later updated on September 6 to specify that it would be on the album. Cropper played a portion of the song on guitar prior to performing a streamed concert to the Discord server Weezercord on September 18[citation needed]. On February 22, 2021 during a podcast interview, Cropper recalled the moment when he received a phone call from the band notifying him that "Thrown It All Away" would be appearing on Van Weezer. [6] The extent of Cropper's contribution to the song is unknown, and Karl Koch has expressed doubt about Cropper's involvement.[7]

On December 9, 2020 Cuomo released the 1993 demo of the song (albeit with a truncated ending) on the demo storefront on his personal website, as part of the compilation Patrick & Rivers.

"Thrown It All Away" appears as an unlisted, "hidden track" on the vinyl releases of Van Weezer, followed by a clip of Ric Ocasek singing a scrapped verse for the song "I Need Some of That." While answering fan questions about the album upon release over Instagram on May 6, 2021, producer Suzy Shinn stated that the very end of the Van Weezer bonus track featured a very small portion of lyrics taken from the 1993 demo of the song.

Lyrics

Sometimes I feel very sad
When I think of what I once had
Everything you gave to me
Everything a boy could need

I've thrown it all away
I've gone and lost my way
It's not like yesterday
I've thrown it all away

My room is empty now
You don't even heat it now
But I remember playing there
Do you too, or don't you care?

I've thrown it all away
I've gone and lost my way
It's not like yesterday
I've thrown it all away
It's not like yesterday
I've thrown it all away

All away, all away
All away, all away
All away
