Overview
Producer Ric Ocasek was said to have been a fan of "Brightening Day," saying he thought it would make a great single. The song, which was originally known as "My Best Friends Are Gone," has a somewhat dryer sound than most of the rest of the songs from the sessions, and is also notable for having a somewhat varied guitar solo - rather than the usual Green-era mirroring of a vocal melody.

Lyrics
My best friends are gone
Far and way beyond.
And they left me here with no one by my side.
How can I get by
With no one to [try]
And pick me back up when I fall down?
My support has left
Me and I'm a wreck
About things I need to help me make it on through.
Now what can I do
With no cheering crew
There to make me feel like I don't suck?
There was a brightening day.
My whole scene has split
They don't give a spit
About anybody else on earth but themselves.
So we'll burn in hell
And think that it's swell
Just as long as we get our own rooms.
