Like other songs recorded for "Pinkerton," "Devotion" was originally intended for "Songs from the Black Hole." When that concept was abandoned in favor of the Puccini-inspired end result, the song was lost in the shuffle and not chosen for inclusion on the album. The band did record it during the albums sessions, however, and issued it as a B-side for retail editions of "El Scorcho."
"Devotion" is one of the slowest songs Weezer recorded in this early 90s period. The lyrics express fondness of a platonic nature giving way to romantic love.
Although never performed live before an audience, fans have claimed to have heard the song performed by the band at soundchecks, and a brief clip of the song performed acoustically can be found online.
