"I Just Threw Out the Love of My Dreams" is the b-side to "The Good Life" single, commonly referred to as the OZ EP. Originally, the song was written for Songs from the Black Hole.

Appearances

Overview

"I Just Threw Out the Love of My Dreams", commonly abbreviated by fans as "IJTOTLOMD" is an interesting song because it was the only Black Hole demo to receive proper SFTBH treatment; that is, it has the female vocals (sung by that dog.'s Rachel Haden, who would have played Laurel), its sound is exactly how SFTBH would have sounded (multiple singers, heavy "spacey" EML Electrocomp 101 synth) and it was officially released.

IJTOTLOMD was played at a soundcheck while Weezer toured with that dog.. During the soundcheck, Rachel sang lead vocals. Additionally, Rachel sang lead vocals on Superfriend at a soundcheck in 1995 (showing that she was at least familiar and most likely on board with the concept before it was abandoned).

Live performances

When The Rentals re-united in 2006 with Rachel Haden as a touring member of the band, they performed the song live with Haden on lead vocals several times on their tours throughout 2006 and 2007. In January 2011 Haden performed the song live onstage with Weezer.

Laurel's Song

The original demo was intended to be for Songs from the Black Hole. It was sung by Rivers Cuomo, but pitch-shifted to show that it was meant to be sung by Laurel, who at the time would be played by Rachel Haden. In the song, Laurel sings about rejecting Jonas, despite being in love with him. Some lines could refer to a lover she has back on Earth ("Even though my love's a world away"), or perhaps Jonas left for his mission and landed on Nomis, leaving Laurel on Betsy II.

Lyrics

<lyrics>I'm so tall, can't get over me I'm so low, can't get under me I must be all these things For I just threw out the love of my dreams

He's in my eyes, he is in my ears He's in my blood, he is in my tears I breathe love and see him every day Even though my love is a world away Oh, he's got me wondering My righteousness is crumbling

Never before have I felt this way I know what is right, but want for him to stay I must be made of steel for I just threw out the love of my dreams

He's in my eyes, he is in my ears He's in my blood, he is in my tears I breathe love and see him every day Even though my love is a world away

Oh, he's got me wondering My righteousness is crumbling

Oh, he's got me wondering My righteousness is crumbling And I see him everyday Even though my love is a world away

He's in my eyes, he is in my ears He's in my blood, he is my tears I must be made of steel for I just threw out the love of my dreams </lyrics>
