Without the liner notes in front of me, I can't be exactly sure when Rivers Cuomo recorded this buzzy ode to "mental slippin'," but that insistent one-note riff recalls the Blue Album period, and his aerobic self-deprecation suggests the Paleo-Pinkerton age. So I'm guessing mid- to late-1990s. Of course that's just a rough estimate. The grandstanding guitar solo and his repeated exhortations to "pick it up, y'all, pick it up" have been found in the same geological strata as Maladroit and Make Believe. Same with the line, "If I was run over by a brand-new Range Rover, I'd actually be glad." But that's all academic: Whenever it was committed to tape, "My Brain Is Working Overtime" is less an artifact of Cuomo's career than a testament to his one-man-band capacity for generating incisive hooks and grinding pop riffs.
