<- Pre-1991 | 1991 | 1992 -> The Weezer Recording Chronology (WRC) is an attempt by Weezerpedia to create a successor to the Recording History, a detailed list of every demo, bootleg, and studio recording by the band Weezer and any directly associated bands, written by Karl Koch from the years of 2000 to 2011. Pages are separated by years.

This page details the year 1991. It contains many early recordings that would lead to the creation of Weezer, as well as any related bands and recordings.

Jason Cropper lived in Northern California and played guitar in this band, until Pat Finn brought him to LA in Spring 1991. This tape is included for the sake of completeness. It is unknown if it was distributed beyond band members and their friends. Another early Jason Cropper effort, he plays guitar on this 4 song unmarked demo

Late Bush/early 60 Wrong Sausages rehearsal, spring 1991

Although the band comprising of Patrick Wilson, Pat Finn, and the newly joined Cropper (Tom Gardocki was a member of Wax by this time) had been without an official name since 1990, the band still practiced. This rehearsal tape marks an important step that was after Bush, but before 60 Wrong Sausages, where the band ran through several songs without vocals.

Karlification!

Although Sixty Wrong Sausages would not be officially formed until later in the summer of 1991, this practice tape represents an important step on the road there. Pat, Pat, and the newly arrived Jason Cropper (whose guitar stylings were similar to Tom Gardockis, who was by now a full time member of Wax) run through numerous songs, mostly without vocals. The only thing missing from the 60 Wrong Sausages line-up was the name, and the soon-to-join Rivers.

Fuzz practice, February 18, 1991

Cuomo formed Fuzz in the spring of 1991 to embody his newer songs. Cuomo sung and played guitars, Wilson played drums, and Scottie Chapman played bass. The band had a sound comparable to, if not, heavier than the grunge music of the day. Chapman left the band after one show at the Coconut Teaszer in Los Angeles, California, and after trying out another bass player, the band dissolved in the early summer as 60 Wrong Sausages started not very long after. Chapman went on to join the cast of the TV show Mythbusters and now works as a dental hygienist.

A practice was recorded live without multitracking, likely at a rented rehearsal space, on February 18.

Karlification!

Fuzz was a band that Rivers formed to embody the songs he was coming up with. The sound was heavy and rocking, somewhat in the style of the then - new style of such groups as Nirvana, Mudhoney, and Soudgarden. Actually, it was far more rocking than those bands! Fuzz had an enormous sound. I believe they had 2 shows. The line-up was Rivers singing and guitar, Pat Wilson on drums, and a girl named Scottie Chapman on bass. Then Scottie either left or was kicked out. (Scottie turned up years later, by the way, as one of the cast members of Mythbusters" on The Discovery Channel. See her present day Mythbusters bio here. There was an attempt to keep the band going, and a different girl bass player was breifly tried out for a few days. But around that time (early summer 91), 60 Wrong Sausages started up, and Rivers let Fuzz fizzle out.

The Dum Dums

The Dum Dums were a glam punk band formed by friends of later members of Wax, whom Wilson and Finn had become acquainted with through Gardocki, formerly of Bush. The band's purpose was to steal audience from the area's "real" glam bands by performing very silly material. The Dum Dums consisted of Bob Hnilo and Von Lono, who would later become part of the "Stoner Ave. crew", as well as people known as Sanford and Lance. Wilson, Finn, and Sharp would frequently come on stage, playing roles such as Wilson and Sharp's "fat men" characters, where they would come on stage wearing clothes stuffed with pillows. After the band lost two members, Wilson and Finn were asked to fill in as their drummer and bassist respectively, where they would play several shows from the summer of 1991 to the summer of 1992. No demos were recorded with Wilson and Finn, although a demo tape was recorded before they joined, and at least one show with the two was videotaped.

Karlification!

This was a very strange punk-glam band that was started up by some freinds of the guys who would later become Wax. One of these future Wax men was Tom Gardocki, who was playing in Bush with the two Pats. Via Tom, the two Pats made the aquantence of the Dum Dums. The Dum Dums included two guys named Bob and Vaughn, who were later roomates of both Pats, Jason, and Karl at 1711 Stoner Ave in west LA.

The Dum Dums looked extremely "Sunset Strip" but sang very silly material. Their goal was to steal audience from the "real" sunset strip bands, by making fun of that glam metal music and style. Early on, Both Pats and Matt Sharp would come out on stage at Dum Dums shows and play weird roles, like Matt and Pats "Fat Men" schtick, where they would wear huge clothes stuffed with pillows, and bounce around the stage. After the Dum Dums lost a few members, Bob asked the two Pats to fill in as drummer and bass player, around the start of the summer of 1991. Pat and Pat would play numerous shows with them between summer 1991 and summer 1992. At least one of these shows was videotaped, but i dont think either Pat was involved in any demo or practice recording with the group.

(a demo tape exists, but this was recorded before either Pat was involved)

United Dirt, late 1990-early 1991

This was a side project of the Dum Dums, which included Wilson and Finn alongside most members of the Dum Dums, and which might have led to the two eventually joining the Dum Dums. United Dirt's music was very silly, offensive, and heavy, and featured both Lono and Wilson playing drums at the same time. The group's only performance was in late 1990 as an encore to the Dum Dums. Around the same time, a practice tape was recorded, which is now lost. A demo was also recorded and still exists, which was recorded with a drum machine.

Some known United Dirt songs out of the 6 "cohesive" ones include:

Karlification!

United Dirt was a Dum Dums side project, that included most members of the Dum-Dums, plus both Pat Wilson and Pat Finn mixed in. This may have laid the groundwork towards the two Pat's later participation in the Dum Dums.

The entire thing was a huge joke. The songs were all extremely foul mouthed death metal, with little musical structure, and were (if one had a broad sense of humor) unbeleivably funny. Both Pat Wilson, and Vaughn, (the Dum Dums drummer ) played drums at the same time. Bob Hnilo and somebody else screeched out the horrendously offensive lyrics.

The group appeared on stage once, as an "encore " to the Dum Dums, in late 1990. This was recorded. Track list unknown.

Also, a "practice/rehersal" was recorded, about the same time. (this may have come about due to Bush and the Dum Dums sharing a rehersal space)

All in all there were about 6 cohesive songs. some known titles are...(edited for explicit content) Master of the Long Boats Mary, **** of Bethlehem Pope John Paul, **** my **** The practice tape has gone missing. What is intact is a "demo tape", recorded with a drum machine. The demo doesnt have the magic of the 'live' performance, but its still pretty funny.

If you are familiar with the outrageous work of bands like Exodus and Venom, you might get the idea. United Dirt was a sort of Venom/Napalm Death/Exodus style Tenacious D thing, years before it was ready to be unleashed on the public.

Bad Attitude, No Apologies, June 1991-December 1992

Left Nut was a band from Boston, Massachusetts, that was active from 1988 to 1992. The band had multiple bass players with their last, Mikey Welsh, joining in June 1991.[1] At some point after Welsh joined the band they recorded with the label One Way Productions who had done multiple releases for local bands in the past, however the songs went unreleased and eventually the label shut down.

In the summer of 1999, one of the founders of the label (Brooks Whelan) resurrected it to release unheard recordings made during the time of the original label's run, including Bad Attitude, No Apologies.[2]

60 Wrong Sausages, August-December 1991

The frequent collaborations between Cuomo, Wilson, Cropper, and Finn led to Cuomo joining the then-unnamed band of Wilson, Cropper, and Finn, later to be called 60 Wrong Sausages. The catalog of the band had expanded to include Cuomo's own compositions, as well as his collaborations with Wilson. The band name came about in a spur of the moment discussion. Someone suggested "Sausage", then "The Wrong Sausage", and finally: "No, it cant just be one wrong sausage! It needs to be, like, SIXTY Wrong Sausages!"

The line-up was:

  • Finn: bass and vocals on about 1/2 of the songs, backup vocals on the rest
  • Cuomo: lead guitar on about 2/3 of the songs, vocals on about 1/3 of the songs, rhythm guitar everywhere else, occasional drums
  • Cropper: lead guitar on about 1/3 of the songs, rhythm guitar everywhere else, some backup vocals
  • Wilson: drums on almost everything, vocals on several songs, lead guitar and vocals on a few songs
Karlification!

Sixty Wrong Sausages came about in August 1991. The increased collaborations between Pat Finn, Pat Wilson, Jason Cropper, and Rivers somehow blossomed into this band. At first it was a trio: the two Pats, and jason, playing together in a fashion not unlike Bush (see above, spring 1991). But things were changing a bit and somehow a more carefree, less strict attitude was developing in both the music and in the band structure.

Meanwhile, Rivers's own Fuzz (with Wilson, see spring '91 above) essentially disintergrated, and he seemed to be starting a "giddy" phase, too. At the Urban Avenue apt, Rivers and Pat Wilson made a group of songs that brought everyone to their knees in laughter. Within a few weeks Rivers had joined this new band, which played a combination of these new songs (see below), some Pat Wilson solo songs, and a number of re-tooled Pat Finn/Wilson Bush-era songs.

The line-up was:

Pat Finn: bass, and vocals on about 1/2 of the songs, backup vox on the rest

Rivers Cuomo: Lead guitar on about 2/3 of the songs, Vocals on about 1/3 of the songs, rhythm guitar everywhere else, occasional drums

Jason Cropper: lead guitar on about 1/3 of the songs, rhythm guitar everywhere else, some back-up vox

Pat Wilson: Drums on almost everything, Vocals on several songs, lead guitar and vocals on a few songs (this is where Rivers would drum)

The band name came about in a spur of the moment discussion. Someone suggested "Sausage", then "The Wrong Sausage", and finally: "No, it cant just be one wrong sausage!! it needs to be, like, SIXTY Wrong Sausages!"

Cholesterol EP, November 1, 1991

After the band came to fruition, they decided to record a demo tape before rehearsing and playing shows. The drums were recorded on Wilson's Octapad, as there was no room for drums in the Urban Ave. apartment. The demo was recorded throughout several weeks and wasn't finished until they decided to practice at a rehearsal space in October. The master tapes have been destroyed.

In September '91, when the concept of this new band was finally settled upon, the band made the decision to first work on a demo tape as opposed to practicing and playing shows. They recorded in Rivers's tiny Urban ave. apartment. The drums were done on Wilson's Octopad, as there was no room for drums in the little room. The demo took several weeks, sessions squeezed into school and work schedules, and was not completed till the end of October - after they had finally broken down and started practicing at a rehearsal space. The demo was never distributed beyond friends. The master tapes have been destroyed.

about this table

On November 29, 60 Wrong Sausages played their first and only ever show at the Phoenix Theatre in Petaluma, California opening for Nuisance alongside Monsula and One Man Running, which was videotaped. The band broke up shortly after, with Karl Koch writing around the time of the show "band breakup seems inevitable."

Karlification!

The band then played one show, at the Phoenix Theatre in Petaluma CA, on Thanksgiving day (Nov 26?) 1991. A videotape of this show exists. The audio quality is challenging due to the awful acoustics in the hall, and a poor quality P.A. system. The show is interesting because everyone's old LA friend Matt Sharp (then living up in Berkeley CA) came to the show. Within 3 months he would be in the band on that stage at the Phoenix, Pat Finn would not be in it, and a whole new group of songs would be taking over the setlist....

Rivers helped his friend Kevin Ridel (later of Lunch Box and Ridel High) record his Christian rock songs, for an album for Kevin's new band, The Truth. Rivers helped engineer this demo, and helped with back-up vocals, and probably the guitar playing.

Karl Koch, Weezer Recording History, Page 2

Ridel got a band together to play live shows as The Truth, but when he noticed some gaps in his lineup, he got Cuomo to play bass and Finn to play guitar. The other members of the band were Jeffrey Urbach and 3 unknown backing singers. The band played at least one show at the Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood, California after several rehearsals. "My Salvation", "With You In Heaven", and "I Belong To God" are known to have been performed at this show.

Kevin was getting together a band to play shows in his latest attempt to establish himself on the LA scene. Upon discovering some gaps in his band 's line-up, he asked Rivers to play bass, and Pat Finn to play guitar! They practiced together several times (the band also had some bonehead drummer and a trio of heavenly back-up singers), and they played at least one show, at the Whiskey in Hollywood. it was a stellar performance, and may have been recorded, no tape has surfaced as far as I am aware.

The 50 Song Project, December 1991-March 1992

After 60 Wrong Sausages dissolved, Cuomo was starting to find more excitement in his newer writing. At the same time, Cuomo and Wilson both expressed interest in writing songs like The Pixies and Nirvana. They, along with Cropper, soon started writing with the intent of writing 50 songs for a future new group and lineup. Fuzz material was considered sufficient material, however Bush and 60 Wrong Sausages material was deemed too different. They didn't quite make it to 50.
