The Weezer Recording Chronology (WRC) is an attempt by Weezerpedia to create a successor to the Recording History, a detailed list of every demo, bootleg, and studio recording by the band Weezer and any directly associated bands, written by Karl Koch from the years of 2000 to 2011. Pages are separated by years.

This page details the year 1992. It contains the beginnings of Weezer, and their first ever shows.

about this table
Karlification!

Shortly after the first (and only) 60 Wrong Sausages show, the band was no more. Pat Finn was going through some weird times, and Rivers was losing interest in the band, finding more excitement in his own new song material. About this time, Rivers and Pat Wilson expressed a mutual interest in moving toward the type of songs that bands like the Pixies and Nirvana were doing. While there was no definate plan, they embarked on a songwriting spree, hoping to write 50 new songs between them, and from this new roster move forward with an unnamed new band. While no one knew it at the time, this new band would not include Pat Finn, but rather Matt Sharp (who still lived in Northern California at this point). It was a definate stylistic move away from the more rythmic jazz/jam/riff oriented 60 Wrong Sausages, and consequently the different writing style of Pat Finn. They never quite made it to 50. However, the old Fuzz song roster was accepted as sufficient material, bolstering the list by at least 5-6 songs. Bush and 60WS songs were deemed too different for the new plan.

On 2/15/92 Rivers, Pat, Jason (on acoustic guitar, which he would retain untill late fall 1992), and Matt (newly arrived from Berkeley, CA), got together at T.K. rehersal studios, in West LA, and rehearsed for 2 or 3 days straight. On the 2nd or 3rd day, somebody rolled tape for a while... Note that weezer wasnt actually named yet. On the original tape the following band names were all crammed on the label, a joke on how no one could decide on the name for the band yet. Some were old names, such as "Fuzz", but there was also such notables as "Meathead", "Outhouse", and "Hummingbird", and I know some other names being kicked around were "the Big Jones" and "This Niblet", and something like "The Leafy Green Reefer Machine".

Pat Wilson & Karl Koch demo, ~April—May 1992

Patrick Wilson and Karl Koch wrote and demoed "Martha" live to a micro-cassette, with Wilson on acoustic guitar and both sharing vocal duties. This would be the first in a long line of song-writing between the two, which would eventually become Southern Fried Swing. 50-60 cassettes were made by the duo from late spring 1992 to 1997, mostly recorded during downtime while touring with Weezer.

about this table
Karlification!

This silly song was significant only because it was the first of a long spontaneous somgwriting collaboration between Pat Wilson and Karl (and occasionally Pat Finn too). This team-up eventually became known as Southern Fried Swing. Over the course of 1992-1997, about 50-60 tapes were made, mostly done while on the road with weezer, in hotel rooms and on the bus. Most songs centered around very low-quality beginners' keyboards, found at Salvation Armys and Radio Shacks. I mention all this here due to the impossibility of keeping track of all the recording that has gone into this project.

Meanwhile Brian (who was not to meet the other weezer guys till December), went into Greene Street Recording Studios in New York City, with Carnival Art, to record what I believe is their second album (I do know for a fact that it's their final album.)

This album was released on the Beggars Banquet in fall 1992.

By this time, Keith (the drummer, who would later drum for Shufflepuck) had left the band. Ed, however, was still in.

Weezer practice, May 1992

An early Weezer practice in the Amherst House's garage, recorded in May 1992.[2] Many rehearsals and practices took place in the garage, some taped to study and scrutinize later on. This practice may have been recorded on Cuomo's TASCAM 688 Midistudio 8 Track recorder, which was then mixed-down to stereo. In between songs, the band would talk and work on guitar parts.

This is one of two rehearsals known to have been recorded, and only survive via lucky duping of the master tapes.[2]

On a few occasions, the guys rolled tape during their practices in the garage, for later scrutiny and study. As far as I can tell, this occasion was taped on Rivers's 8-track, but was all put down directly to 2 track, as a once-and-final mix. Good sound quality was not the goal, as it was not a demo.

Weezer's first demo (English Acid tape), May 25, 1992

After multiple shows and rehearsals, Weezer decide to record their first demo tape on May 25, 1992, with the hope to send out and get more gigs. It was recorded in the Amherst house garage on Rivers' 8-track recorder, track by track.

About ten copies were made on blank cassettes and given to clubs in the Los Angeles area, one of which reached the owner of English Acid and led to Weezer booking their first gig at the venue. Due to this, the tape was nicknamed the "English Acid tape" by Karl Koch.

Somewhere in May the band decided it was time to prepare a demo tape, to try and book shows at a wider range of clubs in LA. The whole band recorded their parts in layers, on Rivers's 8 track. A few copies were made on whatever blank cassettes were lying around, and given to several clubs to try and get shows booked. made in the garage (all 3 songs were the best recording they'd made to date, but they were still a little shaky....)

Weezer's second demo (The Kitchen Tape), August 1—4(?), 1992

Weezer were never happy with their first demo, so in August 1992, they sought out to record an album. If the recording went well (in their eyes), it would be shopped to indie labels for a small release. The drums would be recorded in the Amherst house's kitchen, with the rest recorded in the garage, all over a period of three to four days. After recording was done, it was decided it would be their second demo, nicknamed The Kitchen Tape after the kitchen used to record the drums.

About twelve copies of the demo were produced and given to various people, including local producer and engineer Paul du Gré. These copies came in two configurations, one leaving off "The World Has Turned and Left Me Here", "Undone - The Sweater Song" and "Say It Ain't So". The shorter configuration was bootlegged in the late 1990s and early 2000s, with "Let's Sew Our Pants Together" mislabeled as "Silent Dreams".

Karlification!

This was a more serious attempt at getting a demo put down on tape. the name The Kitchen Tape started because the drums were recorded in the kitchen , adjacent to "the" garage. This sounded good but sure bummed out the neighbors!

The purpose of this tape was once again, to get shows and also try and make an impression. There were no aspirations yet to try and generate real label interest, but the concept of "creating a buzz" was being thrown around. About 12 copies were made back in the day, on whatever blank cassettes that were lying around.

Somehow, 5 of these songs were at some point "leaked" out, and are fairly well available now as mp3's (or will be soon). To avoid future questions, I've included an extra column on the chart below. The "booted?" column refers to which songs are the 5 mentioned here. A "yes" indicates so.

Note that not all the songs in this chart were part of the "final product". This chart represents the contents and labeling of the original 8 track master tapes. The "final product" demo tape included, in some cases, just the the 5 songs that are now mp3's. In other versions the demo was 8 songs, with the addition of "The World Has Turned and Left Me Here", "Undone - The Sweater Song" and "Say It Ain't So"

Please note that "Thief, You've Taken All That Was Me" has been mis-labeled "Silent Dreams" in many cases.

After unsuccessfully securing a gig, the band would retreat to Jason's mother's apartment in Oakland, California, where they would make use of her piano and a flute. Among what was recorded at the apartment were a series of improvised jams, a short piano version of "Linus and Lucy" by Vince Guaraldi, and a jam later nicknamed "Symphony of Sludge" with Cuomo on flute and the others all on piano. Short clips of these have surfaced from a stickAM stream where Karl Koch showed off old recordings and demos.

Club Dump had a video camera operator who would take overly special effected videos of bands shows, if bands ponied up $10 for the tape. Weezer almost always went for the deal. This show was videotaped. The video has unfortunatley gone missing, it may be in the collection of Matt Sharp.

"The Real Demo", November 14—November 15(?), 1992

Cassette tapes

Weezer recorded their third demo (often referred to as the Real Demo) on at least November 14, 1992, though it's likely they finished recording on November 15.[4] It was recorded at a studio (actually a converted garage) by Jon Pikus, friend of the band and drummer of El Magnifico, without the owner's knowledge. As of the time of recording, Pikus was still a learning engineer, and the demo was, according to Karl Koch, "flawed by sonic strangeness, such as a snare drum that sounded like a tennis ball hitting a racket at Wimbledon". Nonetheless, it was still the best representation of the band yet.

i actually was paid for my services, in the form of a pair of stereo speakers (the kind you buy from a dude in a van for like $100, who lures you in by asking if you want to buy some "studio monitors"). the studio's usual monitor speakers had gone missing and we needed to mix, so one of the guys in the band brought these giant speakers in, we mixed on them, and then in lieu of payment (which i think we all estimated at around $200, but no one had any cash) they left me the speakers as my compensation. then i blew them up shortly thereafter on another session.

matt and i mixed it late night 'cause the others had gone home, until 4 am, heavily referencing the surfer rosa CD which was the only album we had there, the cracking snare sound was an impulsive late night decision that just seemed to lend itself to the recording (in retrospect does it crack a little too much? well, sure)

the intro of undone had some talking from bandmembers of Wax, joe sib & soda i think, in addition to the vinyl snippets we mixed in...

...i had my mastering guy Alan Yoshida at A&M; master it for me for free as a favor. there was also a short bonus track of rivers playing beethoven's 9th symphony for like 30 seconds that got left off. i thought that say it aint so was the real gem of the session, and i kept it on my production reel for a few years to follow..

By this point, the band had gone on an aggressive campaign to get signed to a record label, making several copies of the tape and sending them to record label offices and personnel, lawyers, and producers. There were 3 different sets of the demo. The first, a set of around 75 cassettes, had a blue label, the second, a set of around 100 cassettes, had a green label, and the third, another set of around 100 cassettes, had a yellow label. There was no J-card.

The original tape contained 4 songs, although some contained 5. The band recorded a version of "Surf Wax America", but they deemed it not quality enough to put on the main demo, so they put it on the flipside of the tape of only about 15 copies for friends, unlabelled. The Real Demo's version of "Undone - The Sweater Song" contains Koch's first ever contribution to a Weezer recording: a sequence of samples from several sources for the song's intro. It samples audio from several vinyl records, including movie dialogue and Firesign Theatre albums.

This demo was recorded at a weird little 16 track studio in Hollywood. It was actually a converted garage at some dude's house. Weezer's aquaintence John Pikus (of El Magnifico and later the Campfire Girls) was the engineer. They banged it out over the course of 2 days. They could have worked faster but the studio was being "borrowed" with out the knowledge of its owner, who was only absent at certain times.

In any event, John was at the time a capable but still learning engineer, and the tape, while being the best-yet representation of the band, was still flawed by sonic strangeness, such as a snare drum that sounded like a tennis ball hitting a racket at Wimbledon.

Jon Pikus writes:

"i actually was paid for my services, in the form of a pair of stereo speakers (the kind you buy from a dude in a van for like $100, who lures you in by asking if you want to buy some "studio monitors"). the studio's usual monitor speakers had gone missing and we needed to mix, so one of the guys in the band brought these giant speakers in, we mixed on them, and then in lieu of payment (which i think we all estimated at around $200, but no one had any cash) they left me the speakers as my compensation. then i blew them up shortly thereafter on another session.

the intro of undone had some talking from bandmembers of Wax, joe sib & soda i think, in addition to the vinyl snippets we mixed in..." [actually I recall a lot of mentioning of Wax done by Matt and the guys in their vocal takes. I dont recall any actual Wax member in attendance, but it HAS been over 10 years...] -karl

"...i had my mastering guy Alan Yoshida at A&M; master it for me for free as a favor. there was also a short bonus track of rivers playing beethoven's 9th symphony for like 30 seconds that got left off. i thought that say it aint so was the real gem of the session, and i kept it on my production reel for a few years to follow." ---Jon pikus

The band dove into the bizarre world of trying to get signed at this point, printing up many copies of the tape, and agressively sending them to label offices, lawyers, and producers, and giving them out to label-personnel at shows. Overall there were 3 different printings made. There were no j-cards, just adhesive label stickers on the cassettes. The first set (about 75 cassettes) had light blue labels. The second (about 100) had green ones, and #3 (about 100) had yellow labels.

The tape consisted of 4 songs, listed below. However the band recorded 5 songs. They were never quite satisfied with "Surf Wax America", so that song was only added to a handful of copies for the band's freinds. it was put on the unlabelled side B. I would guess that less than 15 copies have "Surf Wax" on the back side.

The "Undone" on this demo had karl's first weezer recording contribution, a short sequence of samples from various weird records, recorded in the beginning 2 verses. The band also did the talking thing, and the result was pretty chaotic. I used Star Wars quotes (Darth's "you are part of the rebel alliance, and a traitor!"), Gollem (from the Hobbit movie: "tasty morsels..."), and some other bits of nonsense.

the 9th symphony bit that Pikus recounts was in fact recorded, but I beleive was a 'coda' to undone on the original demo tape. It breaks down with wacky chords after a mistake. This bit never made it to mp3/bootleg form.
