Overview
"I'm a Robot" was the final iteration—beginning with "Prodigy Lover" in 2002 and continuing with "Show Me Who You Are"—in the lineage of songs derived from entry #368 in Rivers Cuomo's Catalog O' Riffs. Cuomo is first known to have demoed "I'm a Robot" under the titles "Stupid Robot" and "Happy Robot" in early June 2004, before demoing "I'm a Robot" in late June.
Weezer recorded "I'm a Robot" at Grandmaster Recorders in Los Angeles beginning in July of 2004. By early October, the song had been completed (sans final mix), but was one of eleven completed songs that did not appear on Make Believe (later dubbed the "fallen soldiers" by Karl Koch). In 2010, a completed mix of "I'm a Robot" was released as part of the compilation album Death to False Metal.
Cuomo's solo demos of the song were released in 2020 as part of the digital demo compilation Alone IX: The Make Believe Years.
