weezer show #30: The Coconut Teaszer, Hollywood

The Coconut Teaszer was one of the 'big 3' Sunset Strip clubs [the other 2 being the Roxy and the Whiskey] that were the big holdouts of the glam-metal scene of the '80s. It was difficult for a "alternative" band like weezer to break into this scene, and the leather-clad regulars tended to clear out when anyone not dressed in full rock garb hit the stage. And weezer dressed in anything but full rock garb! Teaszer bills were always a bizarre mix of glam bands, bar rock bands, morbid looking gothic type bands, and the ocassional pop type band like weezer.

Back to the Teaszer for the 7th time! By now the band was sick of the place, but tonights show was a special "Rock For Choice" show, intended to somehow encourage people to vote in the upcoming presidential election. Also on the bill were El Magnifico, Sugartooth, Holy Water, and others.

Setlist: unknown, aside from Undone, which was noted as being "good and crazy!"

Today in Weezer History: 10/27/1992 - Weezer performs at the Coconut Teaszer in Los Angeles, CA. Teaszer bills were always a bizarre mix of glam bands, bar rock bands, morbid looking gothic type bands, and the occasional pop type band like weezer, who today were back to the Teaszer for the 7th time... By now the band was sick of the place, but tonights show was a special "Rock For Choice" show, intended to somehow encourage people to vote in the upcoming presidential election. Also on the bill were El Magnifico, Sugartooth, Holy Water, and others. El Magnifico sounded sorta like Janes Addiction but stranger and noisier, and they were friends of Weezers, as the band included Jon Pikus, who engineered Weezer's 3rd (but first well distributed) demo tape which was recorded around this time. Also in the band was Johnny Lonely, who pioneered the "crazy bald pirate with gaged out earlobes and a huge goatee" look before Nick Oliveri from Kyuss/QOTSA did. He was also about as nuts as Nick on stage. Setlist: unknown, aside from Undone, which was noted in Karl's journal as being "good and crazy!" Flyer artist unknown, but probably a member of El Mag, as evidenced by the "weezer rocks" slipped into the bottom line of text.
