12/04/01 Happy Birthday to Brian Bell! (b-day 12/9)

...random note #1: Get the new "Photograph" e-greeting card here (for PC), and here (for Mac). Pretty cool, take a look!

...random note #2: Cleveland area fans can get pumped for the upcoming show on Saturday the 8th, by listening to 88.9 WRDL FM (Ashland OH) on Friday the 7th. They will be hosting a 2 hour Weezer radio show from 1-3 pm. "in it we will be playing all three albums in their entirety, playing some b-sides and talking about all things Weezer as time permits."

...random note #3: the Hot Topic chain of rock stuff stores is now carrying (while supplies last) both the Green Album limited vinyl LP edition (black vinyl), as well as the UK import 7-inch of "Island In The Sun" on yellow vinyl (see the discography section for photo and details on that one).

...okay, for those looking for some more info on bass man Scott, heres a cool little interview conducted by fan Michael K.:

1. how do you like playing in weezer, so far, now that you've done a few live shows?
"The more shows I get to do with Weezer the more fun I have. I have never been so happy on stage in my life or been in a better band."
2. how was the transition to the 'weezer way,' musically speaking?
"They are the some of the most accomplished musicians ive played with in a long time, so it took me a little while to get my ears together. we work fast. I have been in bands that take two hours to do what we do in 25 seconds. I need to be challenged to keep from being bored and we always are pushing each other to come up with better parts. Never before have I been in a group that the musicians support and encourage each other so much without any competition. I think we are all confident about our ability and enjoy each others playing and/or singing, so that takes out all of the competitivness. So to finally answer your question, I have played in so many completely different kind of bands that the style of music wasn’t so hard to adjust to. I have always made sure that I could play as many different kind of styles of music that I could, from Motown to punk f---ing rock to rockabilly to funk and just plain heavy metal. I have been a fan of Elvis Costello, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath since I was a wee small guy and this might sound nuts, but playing with weezer is somehow a perfect mix of all the bands and music that I have been playing and listing to my whole life."
3. what did you do before playing for weezer?
"Before =W= I was playing in a hard rock band named Broken. I ran my course with them and really just saw music completely different. Its funny because they were encouraging me to play with some different bands due to my apparent desire to play more than the songs called for, [a] very openly boneheaded style of songs which I really enjoy. With time however, I grew restless and would have fits of riffing, and much like a dog that has been in the house too long (Shrinedog?), [I] would have bass freakouts, so they asked me to go play somewhere else to settle down...and while doing this [I] found what seems like the perfect blend of all my favorite jams wrapped into one band who totally seem to enjoy what I have to offer. How lucky am I ? UNBELEIVABLE!!!!!!!!!"
4. how long have you been playing bass? do you play anything other than bass?
"I started playing the trumpet when I was in the fourth grade in the school band. My dad is a saxophone player and a very good one at that. He encouraged me to play whatever instrument I wanted, so when I was getting ready to go to High school I feared that trumpet playing would not be very cool and I was having a hard enough time fitting in as it was, so I decided to try guitar lessons. One month later I asked my dad "what is that instrument that makes that low bump bump pop?" the rest is my destiny, to rock the bass. To sum it up I have never been so happy in my life. Thanks for asking." -----Scott 711
[note that Scott's last name is 'Shriner', not '711', but Scott likes to sign his name that way for a reason that I can't remember if private or not, so for now its a mystery.]

...And THANK YOU to everyone requesting "Photograph"! Find out where to REQUEST "PHOTOGRAPH" AT YOUR LOCAL RADIO STATION HERE. And here is a grass roots fan's effort to help remind folks that "its all about the music"...(though, take note that radio stations tend to ignore "mass" email requests, preferring to hear your individual requests only!!) for example, check out this response...now here's a station that really has their priorities straight...

"Hey Guys! Just wanted to let you know how annoying the same five people emailing me bull---t about Weezer is getting. Congratulations, your marketing ploy has worked! You got a few stupid kids to annoy a music director! Alright! In the end...it's all about the music. That's why I have vowed to NEVER play Weezer on my radio station again! Not like we ever did.
Thanks,
