Overview

Rivers Cuomo first demoed "Space Rock" on his Olympus handheld digital recorder[2][3] in 2001. This demo was released as part of the digital demo compilation Alone VIII: The Maladroit Years in 2020.

"Space Rock" was first demoed as a band under the title "Place the Blame" at Cello Studios in early November of 2001, though it was not finished at the time.[4] The song was recorded, alongside the songs "Cygnus X-1" and "Slave," at Glenn Sound Studios for Seattle-area radio station 107.7 The End on November 14, 2001. Once it became apparent that the songs were not going to air, however, the band released them as MP3s on weezer.com. After it's initial release on weezer.com, the MP3 of "Space Rock" was replaced with a shortened mix.

During the studio sessions for Maladroit in January 2002, the song's lyrics were rewritten. The song's lyrics reflect Cuomo's frustration at his rapport (or lack thereof) with online fans at the time. It is unknown why the title "Space Rock" was chosen, as the song bears little resemblance to the space rock musical genre, though guitarist Brian Bell described the song as "Spacemen 3-ish" in 2002.[5]

"Space Rock" has been performed live only six times.

Lyrics

Album version

Ooh, ooh-hoo

You wanna cry
When you're dealing with the kids

Ooh, ooh-hoo

They know it all
And they're pinning you to boards

It's a game
And you'll play
But you can't have fun
When all they do is say
Lies

They know it all
And they're pinning you to boards

It's a game
And you'll play
But you can't have fun
When all they do is say
Lies
Lies

Demo lyrics

Ooh, ooh-hoo

You'll never leave
When you're waiting up with me

Ooh, ooh-hoo

You wanna die
When you're speaking to the blind

It's a game
It's a shame
And we'll never leave
Until we place the blame

Ooh, ooh-hoo

You wanna die
When you're speaking to the blind

It's a game
It's a shame
And we'll never leave
Until we place the blame
