Overview

Development

"I'm a Robot" came to exist in its final form in July of 2004, with July 31 being the first date in the recording history to list the song as "I'm a Robot". The song evolved over time from the 2002 track "Prodigy Lover" (thus sharing a number in the Catalog of Riffs), with "I'm a Robot" seemingly only retaining the chord progression of the verse of "Prodigy Lover".

From "Prodigy Lover", the song evolved multiple times as demo recordings by Rivers, first as a song called "Kings of Money", then an untitled revision, then "Show Me Who You Are", then "Happy Robot", before finally becoming "I'm a Robot". Aside from "Prodigy Lover" and "I'm a Robot", these titles are only known from the recording history and do not circulate among fans.

Make Believe contender, Death to False Metal

"I'm a Robot" was completed during initial sessions for the band's Make Believe album. The song was one of twelve specific songs initially recorded by the band after Rivers had done much writing and revising. However, after much reconsideration from the band in late 2004 and early 2005, several of these completed songs were cut, including "I'm a Robot", becoming one of what is known as the "fallen soldiers" of the album.

In 2010, when assembling the Death to False Metal album, the completed 2004 version of "I'm a Robot" was reconsidered and included on the album.

Lyrics

I ride the train to work every day
I reach my cubicle about 9 a.m.
I have to earn money to pay my bills
But I don't know how my life turned out this way

I'm a robot, I'm a robot
I don't have any feeling in my heart

I have a wife and a child waiting at home
Occasionally I give my dog a bone
If I am feeling wacky, then I might
Drink a quart of vodka; spend the night down in the gutter

I'm a robot, I'm a robot
I don't have any feeling in my heart

Don't you worry, don't you worry about me
Don't you worry, don't you worry about me
This is how my father was, how his father was
Don't you worry, don't you worry about me

I'm a robot, I'm a robot
I don't have any feeling in my heart
I'm a robot, I'm a robot
I don't have any feeling in my heart
