Guitarist Brian Bell starts off the phone interview by proclaiming his relief that his band, Weezer, will play at the 9:30 Club (202/393-0930) Saturday for the D.C. stop of its four-city tour. You see, when the band toured last year, he didn't like playing at the city's WUST building (which actually was once the home of an AM gospel radio station) because the venue brought back childhood memories of loneliness in a huge, rectangular space that smelled like 100 pairs of sweaty socks.
"My mom taught at my elementary school when I was a kid, and, after school, I had to wait until 4:30 until she [was] done doing her teacher stuff," he explains. "So I'd go play the piano that was in the gym.
"I think I spent too much time in there being a total loner and playing piano," he says. "So now any place that looks like a gymnasium, like that WUST place, I'm not into.".
Mr. Bell, 27, is a little bummed when he's told that the 9:30 Club relocated last year to the old WUST building on V Street NW from its rat-infested quarters on F Street. He'll probably recover from the disappointment before Saturday.
At any rate, Weezer is sure to deliver its fun and ferocious show. The quartet hails from Los Angeles, but like a typical "California" anything, it has no members from that state. (Bassist Matt Sharp is from Arlington.)
