OZMA has its own osmosis

Daniel Brummel wants to set the record straight about his band OZMA. It is not "a talentless Weezer rip off." Actually, the OZMA bassist said his band rips off a lot more bands than people give them credit for, like E.L.O., Metallica, Cornelius and the Flaming Lips.
"We get compared to Weezer a lot but we're just a bunch of kids trying to write good songs," he said. "Weezer has been very helpful. They graciously took us on tour and helped us get our career started. We're always in debt to them but we are trying to do something original."
To further distance itself from Weezer on its sophomore effort, "Spending Time on the Borderline," OZMA embellishes its sound with synthesizers partially inspired by the classic '80s Nintendo game "Tetris," and experiment with the country-tinged "Come Home Andrea" and the oriental track "Utsukushii Shibuya."
Brummel has studied music composition at UCLA, but he said it's not a vital asset for creating rock music.
"Music theory is great to know because it is a language that helps you communicate to other musicians, but it doesn't create talent," he said. "People in bands should spend their time writing songs and creating music. Studying music theory is always secondary."
OZMA performs tonight at Curly's. The show also features Johnny Reliable and Ultimate Fakebook. Show starts at 8:30 p.m. Admission is $5.
