"Unbreak My Heart" is the tenth track on Death to False Metal.

Overview

"Unbreak My Heart" is a Toni Braxton cover, written by songwriter Diane Warren, a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, in 1995. Braxton's original, titled "Un-Break My Heart", was released in 1996.

The song was suggested to Weezer by producer Rick Rubin during the sessions for their Make Believe album, with the final version being recorded in December of 2003. Despite a cover song never appearing on a Weezer album prior, it seems the song was seriously considered for Make Believe and was one of the final contenders for the album, as noted by interviews in the spring of 2005 prior to the album's release.

The May 2005 Alternative Press article, noting that it was still unclear what songs will make the final cut, described the song with, "Weezer's cover version of this song is at least five times more dramatic than Toni Braxton's and ten times as loaded with prom-rock guitar solos." Despite not making the album, the recording history notes that the song was considered for an unnamed movie soundtrack at one point. Part of the reason for the song's lack of release is thought to be opposition from various members of the band. The song's almost-release on multiple occasions made it one of the band's most-wanted recordings for a number of years.

The song was reconsidered by Rivers and included on the 2010 album Death to False Metal. When asked in an interview if the recording was meant to be "ironic", Cuomo explained[1]:

“No. I loved that song. It was actually Rick Rubin’s suggestion. We both loved that song and we both thought it would be great for Weezer, and for my voice, and it’d be great to do like a rock version of it with more of an alternative aesthetic. And you know, just the way I would sing it versus in the way Toni Braxton would sing it. And I love the way it came out, and I think probably the rest of the band really does not like it, and that’s probably why it didn’t make our fifth record, in 2005 when we were recording it.”

Lyrics

Death to False Metal liner notes lyric sheet

Don't leave me in all this pain
Don't leave me out in the rain
Come back and bring back my smile
Come and take these tears away
I need your arms to hold me now
The nights are so unkind
Bring back those nights when I held you beside me

Un-break my heart
Say you'll love me again
Undo this hurt you caused
When you walked out the door and walked out of my life
Un-cry these tears
I cried so many nights
Un-break my heart

Take back that sad word "Goodbye"
Bring back the joy to my life
Don't leave me here with these tears
Come and kiss this pain away
I can't forget the day you left
Time is so unkind
And life is so cruel without you here beside me

Un-break my heart
Say you'll love me again
Undo this hurt you caused
When you walked out the door and walked out of my life
Un-cry these tears
I cried so many nights
Un-break my heart

Don't leave me in all this pain
Don't leave me out in the rain
Bring back the nights when I held you beside me

Un-break my heart
Say you'll love me again
Undo this hurt you caused
When you walked out the door and walked out of my life
Un-cry these tears
I cried so many, many nights
Un-break my

Un-break my heart, oh baby
Come back and say you love me
Un-break my heart, sweet darlin'
Without you I just can't go on

(Say that you love me, say that you love me)
