Fan recollection

Weezer Fan Club member Matthew Newnham wrote about the concert in issue 4 of Weezine:

Anyway, the reason I'm writing is to talk about Weezer, and in particular when I saw them about 3 weeks ago. It was with some trepidation that I, and the rest of the Colchester Weezer Appreciation Society (Sharpy, Alex and Richard) set off towards London to see Weezer. Why? I hear you ask. Well, because of several awful reviews of their live act. I quote 'a band who perform with the spark and fire of men filleting kippers...' ooh scathing. 'Weezer are as boring as our prime minister' (John Major for those of you who don't know). Now that comment really hurts. Indeed, the whole attitude of the British press towards Weezer has been strange. First of all they hail them as being 'wonderful cartoon geeks' and then, having made this whole 'geek' image themselves, they proceed to slag Weezer off for being nerds! Go figure. Then the lights dim and the W sign lights up. Strange music plays over the p.a. After a few seconds I remember what this music is the Battlestar Galactica theme music! How cool can you get?! Images of Cylons (?) and Dirk Benedict flood my mind. It was a perfect start, and from that moment my fears vanished. Three figures walked out, followed by one limping. It was Rivers. He was clearly in immense pain as he made his way to the front, and was helped by the stage crew. As the Battlestar music reached a crescendo Matt climbed onto the drum riser and started to show off his body building poses! The show kicked off with a great version of 'Jamie', all the crowd jumping and chanting (especially the 'hoo-ee-oo-ee-oo' bits!). Next came the highlight- 'No One Else' everyone was singing along. They then played a newie 'You Gave Your Love' (I think) which was really cool. The whole of the album then whizzed by. I didn't stop jumping (except for the quiet bit during 'Say It Ain't So'). Or sweating. The only other bits I remember was when Matt got the crowd singing 'Cotton Eye Joe' an awful dance song that was huge over here. It goes 'Where did you come from Cotton Eye Joe? I'd been married a long time ago. Where did you come from? Where did you go? Where did you come from Cotton Eye Joe?' Great lyrics huh?! At the end I narrowly missed out on catching one of Pat's drumsticks. Damn. Rivers was last to leave the stage. He got the loudest cheer ever. He turned and waved goodbye and smiled for the first time all night. Despite all the pain and suffering he put on a great show. When I got home I made plans to go and see some kipper filleters- they must be damn good!
