"Troublemaker" is a notably repetitive song, with a guitar riff and drum beat that play unchanged throughout almost the entire song. It was added to the track list of The Red Album along with "Pork and Beans" after Geffen said that it wasn't commercial enough.

The single has seen release as a digital single, as well as a one-track promo. A physical retail single was scheduled to be released in the UK in late September 2008, but as of December, this has yet to surface. This has frustrated certain members of the fan community, who enjoy collecting the retail singles, which usually include exclusive B-sides - a continuation of circumstances for such singles as "Pink Triangle", "Slob", or "Perfect Situation". However, good news may be on the horizon. It has been suggested that, while plans for a retail single for Troublemaker have been abandoned altogether, all effort is being put towards the ramp-up of a bigger release for "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived".
