RICK RUBIN IN ON NEW WEEZ!

WEEZER have enlisted the skills of über-producer RICK RUBIN for their fifth album, after scrapping plans to record the follow-up to 'MALADROIT' last year to have some time off.

The band posted 20 new songs on their official website in 2002, including 'Private Message', 'Prodigy Lover', and 'The Victor', but abandoned them after last summer's 'Enlightenment Tour'.

Guitarist Brian Bell said, "Right now we're just playing acoustically. There might be more textures to this record."

He also added that the demos from the 2002 sessions are no longer strong contenders for the forthcoming record: "It's all new stuff... we're still open to suggestions - especially if Rick says, 'I want you to have a second look at this song you did last year.' It's not likely, but nothing's out of bounds at this point."

Currently in the pre-production stages, Weezer and Rubin are expected to enter the studio in the next few weeks. Bell told Rolling Stone: "We have so many songs to choose from and it shouldn't be too much longer before we actually start making the new album."

Weezer are also finishing their first DVD, due out later in the year.
