The earliest known recording of the song was in spring 1993, amongst a set of 8-track demos written by Wilson and Rivers Cuomo.[1]: a It was untitled at the time and given the name "Show Me How to Ride This Thing" by Karl Koch in the Weezer Recording History. It was demoed again as "Old and Wise" in September on a 4-track in New York, NY during the recording of Weezer (The Blue Album),[1]: b and again in late fall for inclusion on the demo tape My Spine.[1]: c
