"Porcupine" is first known to have been demoed in 2001 during pre-production on Maladroit. The song was worked on throughout the album's studio sessions beginning in December 2001. Six in-progress recordings of the song from these sessions were uploaded to weezer.com during the album's production, though the song did not make the cut.
