Moony B'deedle: What was the reason for cutting the meet the producer story from the tales of weezer comic? Will we see it released elsewhere?

Karl: the stoner ave story got too epic and took too long to research and write. so the Ric story will be another time, plus lots of other ideas.

Moony B'deedle: @Karlophone what is the specific flaming lips record that the band wanted Pinkerton to sound like?

lord bambiraptor: I always thought it was Clouds Taste Metallic. Incredible drumming there.

Karl: remind me of the quote or reference for this?? - the FL connection was Dave Fridmann, who Joe Baressi brought in as a sub because Joe had another gig. Dave's credentials included FL albums so he was considered the right kinda guy for the raucous Pinkerton sessions. But i dont recall anyone going "we need this to sound like the FL"

June 9, 2023 11:05 AM (#karlification)

Karl: So its a combination thing as it turns out. Dave's coming on board was a fluke initially, suggested by Joe Baressi when he wasnt able to do the spring/summer sessions at Sound City. But once it was known, it was welcomed, because it was known that Dave did Clouds Taste Metallic, and those drums were what was wanted. The one thing i cant pin down was where was Clouds Taste Metallic recorded. Because Sound City was known as "The 'In Utero' room" and those drums were also a key inspiration, so using that exact room was key. So If Dave got similar results in Oklahoma or whatever, that was cool because he could make it happen in Van Nuys too. But if he had already worked in Sound City a year or so prior? that would have been kind of crazy.

King Tom: Hey Karl, do you remember which songs were played in the VIP lounge during the summer 2018 tour? Can you share the names?

Karl: you mean the songs that were unreleased at the time? i dont recall. maybe ask the annoying guys who tried recording it with their phones.

Moony B'deedle: and this is getting nerdy about video, but was there any specific reasoning behind the change in aspect ratios to the 16:9 Good Life and the even thinner El Scorcho? The Blue album music videos were all 4:3, was this an attempt to make them more cinematic? or was that just the style at the time

Karl: 16:9 (and even wider Cinemascope) were considered "true film" ratios, and all the old classics were filmed on those (2001, etc). before digital took over, filming on film was the "pro" way to go, and so if you wanted to be all artsy (and blow your budget up), you went 16:9. Spike dint do that out of deference to budget and not wanting to come off all pretentious. But a few years later, it was the thinhg to do, and Mark Romaneck was there for it.

GeeWiz: Karl, did you say Rivers new Meteora is a custom build? I looked at them and see a similar model is being retailed, but I could’ve sworn it was custom in some way. Would be curious what was custom about it.

eted: Would be interested to know this as well— definitely looks like a Player Plus HH in the Belair Blue color

Karl: i was told it was built for him, but it easily could be no different from stock. but im sure the electronics were looked at by our tech too

GeeWiz: It’s a beauty. Sounded great too. Do you know what the impetus was for him getting it? Or was as simple as “I want a new guitar.”

Karl: i only know there was talk of a guitar that said "surfing" lol

Karl, are you able to shed any light on the provenance of this song "Hyde - King of Earth" (aka "King of Earth" or "Hyde - The Intro Song") from 2002? Specifically, is it possible Scott wrote it? I know Weezer played it as an instrumental interstitial at shows in 2002, and its sometimes referred to (possibly erroneously?) as "Polynesia." The conventional wisdom (read: hearsay) I always used to hear was that Scott wrote "Polynesia," the instrumental intro from the Lion and the Witch EP, but the "song" on Lion and the Witch is clearly just improvised and not a real "song." I wasn't a fan at this time so I'm not sure where all these titles come from or the origin of all this hearsay. Rivers released a demo of "King of Earth" (with lyrics) as part of his Maladroit demo bundle a couple years ago, but later removed it (it was probably a full-band demo).

To make things even MORE confusing, there's purportedly a Rivers demo called "Hyde" from the pre-EWBAITE era about Rivers and his wife in therapy that people who attended the 2012-2014 focus groups claim to have heard. Do you know if that's a real song?

eted: Have people conflated Hyde/King of Earth with Polynesia before? I haven't seen people do that before I don't think— I know there was the general rumor/statement that Scott wrote Polynesia (could've been just the bassline even) but Hyde/King of Earth is in the COR and I think part of the story around it was that it was taught to the rest of the band in August 2002?

dylan (HMC): Not sure how common it is but i’m pretty sure I’ve had to delete “polynesia” from concert articles in the past.

Karl: Hyde was definitely by Scott. I cant recall what the Polynesia connection is?

GeeWiz: Can you tell me more about Pat’s acoustasonic from the recent Instagram?

Karl: its actually Brians, but like all the "backstage practice instruments" taken on the road, its sort of collectively used. as far as i know its stock, and all agree its not particularly good, but fine for the dressing room
