Overview

Pre-Production and demos

Early album concepts

Ideas for Weezer's twentieth album were being thrown around as early as September 2022, with early threads on Mister Rivers Neighborhood implying Rivers Cuomo looking into having the album be self-titled, a concept the band had not revisited since 2019's The Black Album.[1] In April of 2023, Cuomo began exploring the possibility of the next Weezer album revolving around a musical concept, including the idea of reviving the aborted space-themed rock opera concept Songs from the Black Hole. Other ideas thrown around involved an original sequel to SFTBH, or a musical titled Rewind, about a CD player with the ability to time-travel to the 1990s. During 2023, Cuomo had opened up a channel on his discord sever Mister Rivers' Neighborhood called "Purple, Pink, Orange, Yellow album", implying his interest in making the album self-titled, in the vein of previous albums.[citation needed]

Collaboration with Klas Åhlund

During the summer of 2023, Cuomo began asking fans how they felt regarding the production of two albums by the band Ghost, Prequelle and Impera, with fans taking it as assuming he was interested in collaborating with either producers, Tom Dalgety or Klas Åhlund. By the end of July, Cuomo had confirmed he had settled on Åhlund to produce the album.

By October, Cuomo and Åhlund had discussed doing a rock opera, with Åhlund being "very excited" about it. Demoing began with the idea of writing a story and script around the best songs in contention.

In March 2025. Cuomo would mention the album's release parity with the then in-production untitled Weezer film.[2]

Christmas EP

on May 25, 2024, Cuomo posted an in-studio photo with the caption "Guitar-tracking, Klas style" to Discord[3] and later revealed the band was in the studio with Åhlund for nine days working on a project unrelated to their next album.[4] On June 3, 2024, Cuomo posted a pun comparing Åhlund's name to Sinterklaas: "we liked working with Klas. He was a real saint."[5] Hinting he was working with Åhlund as a producer on a Christmas-themed project he had teased in September of 2023.[6] Members of the server eventually reached the consensus that he was referring to the Christmas album.[citation needed] As of October 2025, this project has yet to materialize.

Recording

Rivers Cuomo would drop news about the album's status via the name of his discord server, Mister Rivers Neighborhood.

Rehearsals for the album commenced in Europe through the summer of 2025, starting, at the earliest, in June[7], and continuing through August[8]. Production of the album, starting on October 7, would run concurrently alongside rehearsals for the band's next tour.

Cuomo would leverage his discord server, Mister Rivers Neighborhood, to drop hints and status updates about the album, talking about how he enjoyed the lyrical content of the album, and how pre-production was coming along[citation needed].
