According to Rivers Cuomo in a post in the Weezer Fan Club Facebook group, the song was originally written in 2012 following the first Weezer Cruise (specifically inspired by the Cruise's "80's Prom Night" party[2]), the verse chords and melody were lifted from a 2004 demo called "You and Me Together", and the verse and bridge lyrics were written in 2015. The song's lyrics appear to match a poem titled "Weird And Cool" from Cuomo's now-defunct Tumblr page.[1]

Demos of "80's Prom Night" were included in the digital compilation Alone XII: The White Year, released in 2020.
