The song's lyrics may be derived from the 2003 book of the same name by author Donald Miller. The chorus melody is an interpolation of Antonio Vivaldi's "Summer."^{[citation needed]}

The song's opening melody was used in ("Old School w3 4 Pink Melody.mp3") from Alone XI: The EWBAITE Years. A demo of "Blue Like Jazz" was leaked online in December of 2022.
