Et tu, Brute?
I didn't have enough
Daggers in my back?
Et tu, Brute?
You wanted to enjoy
The thrill of the attack
Et tu, Brute?
You wanted to devote yourself
To someone new
Et tu, Brute?
How quickly you forgot
The love I gave to you
But I forgive you
I can understand
I am with you
Take me by the hand
Et tu, Brute?
I can't express the pain
I felt to see your hate
Et tu, Brute?
I knew those other crooks
Would come to seal my fate
Et tu, Brute?
The only wound that gushes blood
Was made by you
Et tu, Brute?
I guess there's nothing left
For us to say or do
I am with you
Take me by the hand
I forgive you
I can understand
Et tu, Brute?
Someday you might regret
The choice that you have made
Et tu, Brute?
I won't be there to be your friend
When fortunes fade
I am with you
Take me by the hand
I forgive you
I can understand
Et tu, Brute?

Appearances
Overview
"Et tu, Brute?" is a Latin phrase literally meaning "and you, Brutus?" or "also you, Brutus?", often translated as "You as well, Brutus?", "You too, Brutus?", or "Even you, Brutus?". The quote appears in Act 3 Scene 1 of William Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar, where it is spoken by the eponymous Roman dictator at the moment of his assassination, to his friend Marcus Junius Brutus, upon recognizing him as one of the assassins.
"Et Tu Brute" was demoed several times by Rivers Cuomo in 2003 and 2004 at the band's rented office space, Rod Cervera's studio, and S.I.R. Rehearsal Studios.[1] The song was first heard by fans in November of 2020, when it was among hundreds of demos leaked through the demo storefront on riverscuomo.com. The demos were made available for purchase later that month as part of the demo compilation Alone IX: The Make Believe Years.
Lyrics
Et tu, Brute?
I didn't have enough
Daggers in my back?
Et tu, Brute?
You wanted to enjoy
The thrill of the attack
Et tu, Brute?
You thought you would devote yourself
To someone new
Et tu, Brute?
How quickly you forgot
The love I gave to you
So I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain where you run
I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain to the sun
Et tu, Brute?
I can't express the pain
I felt to see your hate
Et tu, Brute?
I knew the other crooks
Would come to seal my fate
Et tu, Brute?
The only wound that runs with blood
Was made by you
Et tu, Brute?
I guess there's nothing left
For us to say or do
So I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain where you run
I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain to the sun
I loved you so tenderly
I just couldn't see
That you had bitterness
Waiting there for me
I just couldn't see
So I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain where you run
I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain to the sun
I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain where you run
I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain to the sun
