This song is part of the "Byzantine" lineage of songs

"I Can't Forget the Way" (erroneously listed on packaging materials and streaming platforms as "I Can't Forget This Way") is a song by Weezer. It is notable for being the earliest song recorded by the band as well as the first song to be performed live at the band's first concert.

Appearances

Overview

"I Can't Forget the Way" was first demoed by Rivers Cuomo on January 1, 1992, as part of an effort known as "the 50 Song Project",[1] in which Cuomo and Pat Wilson attempted to write fifty songs in the musical style of bands such as the Pixies and Nirvana. The song was recorded during Weezer's third practice session on February 16, 1992, and performed live for the first time at Weezer's first show, at the club Raji's in Hollywood, on March 19. The song appeared on a spreadsheet compiled by Cuomo titled The 4 and 5 Star Demos of Rivers Cuomo, released online in 2008. Part of the song was later used as the bridge of "Byzantine" on The Black Album.

Cuomo's original demo was first released as part of the digital compilation Alone V: Before Weezer on November 22, 2020. A recording from Weezer's third rehearsal was released as part of the 30th Anniversary Deluxe reissue of The Blue Album.

Lyrics

Rolling, crashing, breaking, smashing,
Giving, taking, making, breaking promises
Father, mother, sisters, brother
My best friend, my lover, my destroyer

Believe, I believe
Every time I build the castle
High upon the shore it happens again
It happens again

Here she comes, here he comes
Here I come, closer and closer
Crash and come down
Crash and come down
Crash and come down

I can't forget the way
I can't forget the way
I can't forget the way
I can't forget

Every time I'm sure I'm right
I'm wrong and then I'm wrong, wrong again
That's what I get when I pretend
Walls of sand will keep out
Keep out the waves
Crash and come down
Bring down the walls above us
Pull me closer

I can't forget the way
I can't forget the way
I can't forget the way
I can't forget the way
