Overview
"I Can Love" was first attempted by the band as an acoustic office demo on September 7, 2003. It was attempted again acoustically on October 7. Several electric demos were attempted with Rick Rubin at Swing House Rehearsals on November 7. By the time the band began recording at Cello Studios, the song was no longer being rehearsed. In November, 2020, one of the full band takes of the song from November 7, 2003 was released on riverscuomo.com as a part of Alone IX: The Make Believe Years.
The song was finally released to fans as an iTunes bonus track (along with "It's Easy" from the same sessions) to those that pre-ordered The Red Album on June 3, 2008. The released version is one of the acoustic office demos.

Lyrics
I didn't hope for much
I was used to how things were
Even though I was not sure you'd say
I was throwing it all away
And I never learned to heal
I can't believe what I see
After all this time, it is meant to be
Help me believe, believe, believe
That I can love
I can love
I guess it goes to show that you never should give up
Even when you're out of luck
You might find an angel in your sight
Who turns everything around
I can't believe what I see
After all this time, it is meant to be
Help me believe, believe, believe
That I can love
I can love
Help me believe what I see
After all this time, it is meant to be
Help me believe, believe, believe
That I can love
I can love
