"Mr. Taxman" (also known as "Helpless") is a song written by Rivers Cuomo in November of 2000 and later demoed multiple times during the recording sessions for Maladroit. The song was also revisited during the sessions for the band's intended fifth album in 2002. Similarities between the song and Tommy Roe’s 1963 hit "Everybody" have been pointed out.

Lyrics

Everybody love your body
'Cause it's here that you got to stay
Take your chances, find romances
But you still got your bills to pay

When nothing's on my mind
She can't be far behind
Or begging me to stay
Or pushing me to climb
And I feel so helpless every time

Mr. Taxman, can you hear me?
'Cause I know that you got one too
Down your jockstrap
Don't you talk back
'Cause she's still got a hold of you

When nothing's on my mind
She can't be far behind
Or begging me to stay
Or pushing me to climb
And I feel so helpless every time
That's what you get for being blind

Mr. Taxman, can you hear me?
'Cause I know that you got one too
