Overview

The song existed with another riff. The song was good, but the riff was... It was OK, but it wasn't the greatest guitar riff of all time, which I felt like it should be. Coincidentally, at the same time, our manager said "Hey, you guys should sample the 'Crazy Train' riff in a song." I know he was thinking: "What's going to get people talking? What is going to confuse the internet?" He had no idea what I was making, but it just seemed to me like the perfect suggestion. So we tried it. The tempo fit, and it all just seemed to come together. —Rivers Cuomo, Guitar World interview^[1]

"Blue Dream" is a reworking of the 2010 Rivers Cuomo demo "Ballad of the Briny", a conceptual reworking of the previous demos "Now or Later" and "Stronger." Cuomo first teased a short clip of "Ballad of the Briny" in a video on his YouTube channel on January 18, 2011.^[2] The song title "Blue Dream" was first revealed to be a track for Van Weezer in an article from the June 2020 issue of the magazine Guitar Player.^[3] The article confirmed that the song featured a 'note-for-note cribbing of Randy Rhoads' iconic riff from Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train."' According to Cuomo, Crush Management founder and manager Jonathan Daniel suggested the sampling of "Crazy Train."^[1] On August 21, 2020, Cuomo confirmed "Blue Dream" to be a reworking of the 2011 demo "Ballad of the Briny."^[4]

On May 7, 2020, a press release announced that Weezer would be guest-starring in an episode of the animated sitcom The Simpsons airing on May 10 and that the debut of "Blue Dream" would be featured.^[5] In the episode, a segment of the song's guitar solo can be heard during a chase sequence.^[6]
