"Silently" is the second track on That Dog's second album, "Totally Crushed Out!."

Overview

Anna: This one refers to an obsessive crush I had on someone for a really long time and we never spoke about it for more that five seconds -- maybe ten seconds.

Tony: It was acoustic originally, slower, with banjo and lap steel guitar. Petra turned the banjo line into this amazing vocal hook that sits really well with the electric guitars.

—1995 interview with Anna Waronker and Tony Maxwell

"Silently" was originally acoustic, recorded with Beck on guest banjo. That version surfaced as a B-side on the "Never Say Never" single in 1997, and again in 1998 on the benefit compilation Hear You Me! A Tribute to Mykel and Carli. It would be re-recorded and released on Totally Crushed Out! in 1995.

Lyrics

You silently cheer me up
You don't even know it
You silently piss me off
You don't even know it
You silently turn me up
You don't even know it
You silently check me out
You don't even know it
