The existence of the song was first teased on January 12, 2021 when the chorus lyrics were included as part of a Spotify track consisting only of synthesized speech, titled "ReadMe.txt" Spotify playlist,[1] released to tease the album. The song was confirmed as the first single alongside the official announcement of the album on January 18.

When discussing the song in an interview[2] with Rick Rubin's podcast, Broken Record, Rivers Cuomo said:

“That one is kind of "last second, here is a song that just came up." It wasn't written specifically for this album, but it sounds like it could be a big song and have a much broader audience. And it sounds like it could go on the album with a few tweaks. I guess we have yet to see whether it's going to be the song that everyone actually knows from the album or not. But that's the intention - it's the first single and there's no rules when it comes to the first single.

I think that one come up really recently, like maybe four or five months ago. We were actually working on another record. We were finishing up our heavy metal record called Van Weezer and my manager sent me an early version of the song with the chorus. It was written by one of his favorite writers. Her name is Ilsey and it was actually like a country song. In fact, he sent me a small batch of country songs - like song starters. I just started playing around with all these country songs, not really knowing what they're for.

That one, for some reason, when I sang it, it just sounded like "wow, this sounds like a big universal song." It still sounds like Rivers and Weezer, and we could kind of massage it onto a couple different albums. It could be on a metal album and it could be on OK Human. We could make a country album and let's just start fooling around with it. So we tried to put it on - I think we tried on Van Weezer first. In any case, as we shifted gears into making OK Human, we realized that as much as we loved the album, it would really benefit from having that big flag-waving single that brings in a wider audience to what is probably a pretty difficult album. So we started tweaking it to fit it on there and it worked out really well.”
- Rivers Cuomo, [2]

In the interview, Rick Rubin said he "loved" the song and that it could have been "the template for the whole album."

A remix of the song (featuring indie-pop trio AJR) was released on May 12, 2021.[3][4]

A live version of the song, recorded during the Hella Mega Tour and using more traditional Weezer instrumentation, was released on August 26, 2021.

Music video

Original version

The music video for "All My Favorite Songs" was released alongside the song on January 21 and was directed by Colin Read and produced by Pulse Films and Obra House. It stars Sonny Golden and Monroe Cline.

The video features a completely different mix of the song than what was officially released on music platforms. Major differences include heavier percussion, addition of a muted electric guitar and a lack of drums in the outro.

Rock Band 4 version

The version included as downloadable content for the video game Rock Band 4 appears to be an earlier iteration of the song.

Notable differences include the lack of much of the instrumentation (outside of the piano and string section) as well as several alternate vocal takes.

Lyrics

All my favorite songs are slow and sad
All my favorite people make me mad
Everything that feels so good is bad, bad, bad
All my favorite songs are slow and sad
I don’t know what’s wrong with me
I don’t know what’s wrong with me

I love parties but I don’t go
Then I feel bad when I stay home
‘Cause I need a friend when I take a walk
I like spacing out when somebody talks
I wanna be rich but I feel guilty
I fall in love with everyone who hates me

All my favorite songs are slow and sad
All my favorite people make me mad
Everything that feels so good is bad, bad, bad
All my favorite songs are slow and sad
I don’t know what’s wrong with me
I don’t know what’s wrong with me

Dreamy morning
Walking along by myself
Thinking about life
And trying’ to find my way through hell
Sometimes I wish I was on an island
But then I’d miss the sound of sirens

All my favorite songs are slow and sad
All my favorite people make me mad, so mad
Everything that feels so good is bad, bad, bad
All my favorite songs are slow and sad
I don’t know what’s wrong with me
I don’t know what’s wrong with me
I don’t know what’s wrong with me

Remix alternate lyrics

I've been a yes man
'Cause I don't want to know myself
Wish you the best, man
Now I got no more wishes left
I feel ashamed
When no one calls me
But I do the same
So mom and dad I'm sorry
