Daniel Brummel recounts the song being about a period in his life in which he had fallen in love with "a girl who somehow ended up with the gorilla nickname" at a residential arts program.

"Rain of the Golden Gorilla" was originally recorded as an instrumental for the 1997 4-track demo cassette Ocho. The song was later re-recorded with vocals. The classical song "Udan Mas," (which translates to "Golden Rain") was the basis for this song.

Lyrics

I see you every day
But I tear my eyes away
'Cause if you can't be mine
I don't wanna waste my time
I don't wanna waste my time

I see you now and then
But I look away again
Cause if you're not the one I'm for
I don't wanna suffer anymore
I don't wanna suffer anymore
I don't wanna suffer anymore
I don't wanna suffer anymore

I know the end is near
It has been since the start
But that still doesn't mean
That I could keep you from my heart
That I could keep you from my heart
I couldn't keep you from my heart
I couldn't keep you from my heart

I see you every day
But I tear my eyes away
'Cause if you can't be mine
I don't wanna waste my time
I don't wanna waste my time

The sound flowing through these cables is the blood in my veins
The sound flowing through these cables is the blood in my veins
