"Brightening Day"

"Brightening Day" (originally known as "My Best Friends Are Gone") is a b-side to "Island in the Sun."

Producer Ric Ocasek was said to have been a fan of "Brightening Day," saying he thought it would make a great single. The song is also notable for having a somewhat varied guitar solo, rather than the usual Green-era mirroring of a vocal melody.

My best friends are gone
Far and way beyond
And they left me here with no one by my side

How can I get by
With no one to try
And pick me back up when I fall down?

My support has left
Me and I'm bereft
Of the things I need to help me make it on through

Now what can I do
With no cheering crew
There to make me feel like I don't suck?

There was a brightening day

My whole scene has split
They don't give a spit
About anybody else on Earth but themselves

So we'll burn in hell
And think that it's swell
Just as long as we get our own rooms
