Rivers Cuomo recorded "Sonia, Sonia" on April 22, 1994. Although the song was listed in the Catalog O' Riffs and was recorded alongside other songs that comprise the Fulton Avenue Suite (as it was named on Alone III: The Pinkerton Years), it was not included on Alone III. The song was first heard by fans when it leaked through the demo storefront on riverscuomo.com on November 7, 2020. Cuomo sold the song to an anonymous user through the storefront a few days later, on November 11, and made it available for purchase to all users on November 22, as part of the compilation Alone IV: The Blue-Pinkerton Years.
