The Cars were one of the most successful of the "new wave" of rock bands emerging in the late 70s and early 80s. Their blend of power pop, synth, and DIY ethic made them a crossover band, appealing to classic rockers, punks, and everyone in between. The band was fronted by guitarist and singer/songwriter Ric Ocasek. Upon the band's split after the 1987 album Door To Door, Ocasek went on to pursue a career as a solo artist and producer. He produced three albums by Weezer: the successful, self-titled "Blue" and "Green" albums, as well as the 2014 album Everything Will Be Alright in the End.

Weezer, particularly Rivers Cuomo, considers the Cars at least a minor influence. On August 6th, 1993, Weezer covered the song "Just What I Needed" during rehearsal sessions at Cole Rehearsal Studios in Hollywood, CA. In 2012, Weezer covered "You Might Think" for the soundtrack to the film Cars 2. In 2018, when the Cars were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, they recruited Weezer bassist Scott Shriner to play on stage with them at the ceremony.
