Weezerpedia Discord Q&A with Karl Koch - February 2024

Jason B: It brings us no joy to report this, but the previously settled has been unsettled. We shifted everything on the wiki away from Feb 14 b/c we thought that was a misconception. Any chance you and RC could get on the same page on this one?

Karl: me and him actually discussed this randomly sometime in the last year. I but i forget if i convinced him to let it go lol. His diary does say that date, but the rehearsals were 15/16/17, with the 17th being recorded as "the 3rd rehearsal". so yeah. i mean certainly the idea that "we are a band" was true on 2/14? but actual playing together started 2/15... I mean unless somehow there was a cosmic level disturbance in the force and its somehow impossible to verify

justinhoenke: Karl, do you have a list of the equipment that RC was using in 1999 to record the Black Room demos? Are there any photos of the black room? Are there any photos of 1999 RC?

nimrod: hi not karl but these are the only known 1999 photos of rivers (2 and 3 are oasis gp show jan 23rd 1999) and as for equipment, he used an unknown drum machine for most of the demos, and for amps he likely used his marshall or his fender clean from homie with possibly the blue strat from blue-pink and the les paul jr from 1993

Karl: i like nimrods answer and photos, i dont think i have others.... (but lets not say for sure, because i can never be suire[sic] till every rock is turned over...) i never saw him in person in 1999 (few did haha) so i never got a photo of him that year

Moony B'deedle: Karl I need an ozma thing dug up, can you find the 4 track cover of Jamie Ozma submitted for the fanclub covers tape?

Karl: i have a box somewhere of all the tapes that were submitted to Mykel and Carli for that compilation. I would assume Joses is in there?? Refresh my memory, his cover made the comp, right? if so, are you just curious what the tape looks like?

Moony B'deedle: sure! I know Dan also submitted a tape under the name Chee Chee Boyz which had a few covers on it and only the YGYLTMS cover made it in, if you could find that as well it woulc[sic] be awesome
The Jamie one I learned out about cause @Burnst Jamp found an archive of old RWA email threads and there were old posts of Dan talking about that cover, and I brought it up to him and he was like "oh shit I guess we did record that didnt we." I know they also played it at a few live shows from around that period

Burnst Jamp: Technically they were Weezer-rules mailing list emails not RWA emails 🤓

Karl: ok meaning - its not on the covers comp then? or he would have remembered that a lot better...? anyway ill add that box to my list of goals int he[sic] vault

Moony B'deedle: yeah! the jamie one wasnt on the final comp, that one is a boneified ozma cover that I dont think anyone has a copy of

Burnst Jamp: Have you got pics of the TSG tour itineraries? Have any of them got interesting cover art like the Weezer ones? Also: can I have them?

Karl: er, we were much more DIY/lo-fi than "having itineraries". i do have a buncha paperwork and crap though, never gone thru yet

Jeremy: Hey Karl!

I was wondering if you could lend any more insight or a recounting of the general gist of how songs were narrowed down for the Blue Album.
It seems the band was originally going to release Jamie (and potentially Ms. Young) as a 7" debut, but when the time came for preproduction, it wasn't even demoed at S.I.R. (claiming they were unsure if it should be tried for the album)

We have a full list of the S.I.R. preproduction demos, which I like to use as a general "these songs were in consideration for Blue" list, but I'm wondering if there are any other notable songs we know of that almost made it through to the demoing stage? Was the list of songs just generally agreed upon?

Karl: there werent anything else. I think it was Ric's production instinct that narrowed it down. He liked everything but didnt feel some of them were ready to rock exactly.

nimrod: iirc wasnt jonas supposed to also be on the scrapped jamie 7”?

Karl: the 7" had 2 forks, one was Matt working with Rivers on "Mrs Young", the other was returning to LMU to do "Jonas " (and "Wayne"). i forget the exact timeline but it was in the spirit of "lets work on everything whenever possible, asd whatever comes of it is the answer". Somehow Jonas seemed to be most in the running at the last moment, but of course no 7" happened at all in the end. Indie cred RUINED lol

Jeremy: I'm assuming Jamie and Mrs Young were shown to Ric? Do you know any more notable songs that may have been decided against? Thank you for all the work you do!

Karl: Jamie yes, but Mrs Young not shown to Ric i believe? Could be wrong. Even that early, Matt was starting to forsee his own thing. He was recording demos in the hotel room in NYC while recording blue. He was starting to spew out a lot of good songs but by the time blue was being made, he had come to understand Rivers was on a major roll and really wasnt looking for more tunes now. RC loved to collaborate, but as far as "what weezer should be/release", he was getting pretty specific (which all understood was a good thing, it was working)

Moony B'deedle: did Matt share the demo tapes he digitized last year with you? (It might've been earlier I forget)

Karl: were talking and sharing things on occasion. hes neck deep in that project, i admire his focus

Jeremy: This is great info! Thanks so much!
Lastly: which one are you?

Karl: i guess pro because it was so effective at freaking out the suits at Geffen at a very early meeting

Burnst Jamp: @Karlophone Do you have a photo of the Suburban Advantage demo tape, or any relevant photos from that timeframe? I've worked off and on over the past few months to improve our site's info on the tape and its songs, but it's still missing a sort of.... pizzazz

Burnst Jamp: Karl! The 'ol SA is my number one concern as of late. Any pics? Also---I came to my own conclusion about this but I'd like to run it past you to make sure I'm not spreading the wrong info: Is it reasonable to refer to Suburban Advantage as a "project"/"act" of Pat's in the same sense that TSG is or that Huge Guy was for a short period, or is it more succinct to treat the demo tape as a Wilson solo tape not falling under any project name (in the same sense as "My Spine" was). My conclusion was the latter, since just the one thing was released before he moved on, but historical consensus leans towards the former

Karl: im going to say right off that youve probably given all this much more thought than i have in 20 years. So at the risk of being useless: SA and HG were just Pats 1st 2 names for "his band" (which had no one else in it till 1998), and then he came up with TSG, (final boss level) .....there are no photos of SA/HG because its just Pat, recording solo. Pats various demo tapes are just Pat - but when HE names it SA/HG/TSG, they "become" those, by virtue of the artists intent. am i making sense

Burnst Jamp: Right, I follow. By pics, I mean of the tapes themselves. Are those in your posession or Pat's?

Karl: OH! haha i have cassettes and cds. probably 99% more than Pat personally has. he loses everything
but - no pix therof yet
