Weezerpedia Discord Q&A with Karl Koch - September 2023

From Weezerpedia
Jump to: navigation, search

Moony B'deedle: hi karl, I know the tour just ended, instead of dealing with the issues with weezerpedia as a site I offer a more precient issue, can you karlify the nach recipe? There was a bit of confusion during the creation at the weezerpedia meetup about the specific order of the cheese and sauces since the bundt pan was upside down. I ended up doing it the first layer being chips and then cheese/sauces, so when it was flipped over there wasnt cheese/sauce ontop, which didnt seem intentional. But starting with cheese/sauces would mean everything would burn and stick to the bottom of the pan, which also doesn't seem intentional. Along with this, just make sure everything else is good and add your stamp to it since it's your recipe and it will be made at every future meetup, thank youuuuuu

Karl: that all seems pretty solid. random notes... i didnt mean "easy off" i meant a cooking spray. dont ever use Easy Off in food preparation, that can be fatal.
you are correct, the bundt cake thing needs: 1. some sort of non stick (not "easy off" at all!) but the regular cooking sprays drip down. there must be something that clings better..... scraping burnt cheese out of a bundt ring is no fun. 2. chip player first. (once you invert the whole thing, you'll find it gets all mixed up anyway, and then you add the addl salsa and sauces and avocado chunks so it gets covered up)
there may be more minor tips i can add but i think if one reads that whole page they will have the 411. trial and error helps as far as amounts, cooking time, etc

eted: submitted for your consideration as official weezerpedia mascot— the weezerpede (inspired by the og wikipede and created by @alec B3)

Karl: i wholeheartedly endorse this product
not sure if RC has ever mentioned this (theres now such a massive amount of random data and history hes shared on his server etc), but that centipede with his head is fitting. as he once showed me a little cartoon character he made up as a kid, the "pi-pedipede", a little 3 legged insect with a cylindrical body and smiley face.

dilavni.band(.com): could we get that hypothetical green deluxe tracklist you compiled?

Karl: did i do that? (not asking in an Urkel way, i actually dont recall...) i suppose hypothetical means the list -itself- is hypothetical? i mean i SHOULD have such a list. but did i ever do it??

dilavni.band(.com): you mentioned that you made a green deluxe tracklist that spanned (iirc) 3 cds

Karl: aha!
i was picturing a typed or written list
stunning i forgot i did that project,. it was like 18 months ago and took weeks

September 13, 2023 4:47 PM (#karlification)

Karl: ok now for 10 pages of "green deluxe possibilities":

Karl: oh! aha thats the show list
that was next
stand by for green
oh i see that last page is green info. wtf is going on haha
the show list is the Jedi Texts i was referring to. i made it a LONG time ago, so it contains a lot of info i would NEVER remember now
it doesnt have every single performance though. some radio shows, in stores, etc arent listed
its raw data that should be available, but i realize interpreting/reading my writing will require my assistance.

September 13, 2023 9:51 PM (#karlification)

Karl: page 9. stupid icloud still syncing with laptop

Karl: ok!

Karl: ok heres the missing pp8

Karl: where you see like 10 versions of as song, thats 10 distinct recordings. RC wasnt playing in his quest to nail things down

September 13, 2023 9:59 PM (#karlification)

dilavni.band(.com): also perhaps the Break Up and No More Disappointments lyrics & sheet music

Karl: thems aint be a thing

Moony B'deedle: @Karlophone OH any update on the digitization of the ozma show vhs from the 1996 fanclub meetup?

Karl:

September 13, 2023 5:00 PM (#karlification)

Karl: a note on the 4/13/96 tape: whoever shot it (it wasnt me but a fan, i dont know who, and am not sure if i have that info or not right now) (and at some point they duped their tape and got it to us or M&C, and later i duped the vhs to miniDV) was more shooting a cinema verite thing, just casually filming various conversations and moments as the party went on. Ozma's "set" was an ongoing thing, punctuated by long breaks. And the filmer started and stopped at random spots. and sometimes focused on ozma, but often not. So the tape is a fragmentary thing as far as their "show" goes, but its all gold as far as fan club time capsule. everyone in attendance was either in the club (or a family member of a club member) or in the band. That being said, a "setlist" could be constructed based on the songs we hear/see, even if fragmentary. There are definitely some early Ozma songs, and a lot of weezer covers too. I imagine this would make a fine item for a fan club exclusive video. but im not tackling that just yet

Moony B'deedle: would probably have to be cleared by Jose and Dan, IDK if theyd want it "out there" like that

Karl: of course - thats part of the "tackling" thing. though i have a feeling they will be into it
i mean, theres like 50 people in this video and i dont know who most of them are (anymore), so theres that too. they may not want their image out there

nimrod: karl do you still have the photos from brians first two shows, 11-30 and 12-1? i remember you saying somewhere that you have a handful of photos from each show and only about 1-2 from each show has surfaced

Karl: i have all the photos ive ever had, if that makes sense. now, i cant recall if all are digitized. but i do know theres not many - maybe 6-7 photos total

September 13, 2023 5:47 PM (#karlification)

Karl: ok i have a few answers.. or fails....

Karl: trampoline on DTFM is closest match to the "normal" (faster) version on the mouse house recordings. but neither sounds exact. it must have been remixed/remastered so that it sounds less raw and more pro. in particular Rivers vocals on DTFM are more clear and full sounding
Full band demos circa 1998-1999 - none exist in my cd archives. theres a gap between the Homie rehearsal and full band demo from 12/97 1998 Mouse House recordings with mikey (Velouria etc) and the Cole demos of 4/00. in there are a MILLION Rivers demos (many of which you must now have via his demo sales)
i didnt look at my cassettes yet. there are a small handful of 98/99 cassettes that may or may not be redundant. and if they arent redundant, maybe they are full band
also : i forgot the 1998 mouse house recordings (incl velouria, trampoline etc), mikey bass, were the last full band recordings i have on cd till 4/00
and: i later, more recently, got a trove of about 200 cds dating mostly from 2001-2012ish, and those are NOT integrated into my "archival" cds yet. so those i havent looked at either. there might possibly be some unique recordings mixed in amongst the 100 rough mixes of beverly hills lol

September 13, 2023 9:32 PM (#karlification)

Karl: ok turns out my black sessions is the 2008 repress, unfortunately. Like i said, pretty sure Matt has the 1995 real deal squirreled away, and i do believe the French record label people got it for us at the time from the Black Sessions people, within a month of the actual recording. Also, did i mention i filmed some of the session as it happened? what i dont rem, ember is if i got any of young Radiohead on film. we hung out a while that day, they were also on the bill. Also the audience were like 4 busloads of high school kids the got from some school lol

September 13, 2023 9:45 PM (#karlification)

Karl: no sign at all of "i want to be something" on any of the many many rc demos i have or have lists of.
(from 1998-1999)

hailey :3: actually while youre here karl, i found a newspapers.com source that lists a weezer show on july 20 1992 with Jeff LeWinter, N.C. 17, The Deeds, and Brutal DLX that wasnt on super chrono, do you know anything about it?

Karl: we played 8121 on 7/18/92, NOT 7/20. the bill might be accurate????? but not the date. OR they cancelled that gig, did 7/18 instead, and the bill was totally different. probably no way to find out, but never say never....

juan cena: Hey Karl, on the weezer.net site there used to be a page dedicated to setlists for the Yahoo Outloud and 2001 Japan tours, most of these have been archived except for an image of the setlists for the first Tokyo show and the Sendai show. Would you happen to still have the image? (file name is Japan1and2Setlists.jpg btw)

juan cena: could you share this now karl 🙏

Karl: this is a weird one. here are some facts that add up to a mystery 1. weezer.net did not exist by 2001, we took the content and made it weezer.com by 2001 (when exactly im not sure) 2. there were no contemporaneous karls corner posts about the april 2001 Japan tour because i wasnt on that tour (long weird story, irrelevant to this) 3. i have no recollection of a setlist section in the old weezer.net or the weezer.com sites. (are there screenshots, or archived pages on =wp=? need some context becsause i dont personally recall posting much about that tour)
4. i do have a set of photos Pat took on that tour (they also include some behind the scenes shots at the hash pipe video shoot, which immediately predated the tour). those are currently misplaced (only via endless layers of unfinished file organizing projects - i do have them) but i wonder if finding them might point to other japan tour 4/01 info

September 14, 2023 3:56 PM (#karlification)

Karl: zeroing in here - found my karls corner archives for that time period, and i had forgotten that i was posting regular reports from afar based on Dan (lighting man)'s reports/photos as well as fan reports/photos that were emailed to me.
but the photos themselves are a bit of a big effing mess! however....

Karl: still cant find the actual "Setlist Archive" html file nor a grouping of photos that matches that archived site, even partially. I did find "karls corner archive" pages, but i assume those were never missing

theangel: You've told the famous story of J-Kash sitting on the couch yelling "Back to the Shack" over and over and getting the co-writing credit as a result. Do you know if he came up with the title or something and that's what got him the credit, or if he really just had no input whatsoever?

Karl: i did not tell that story... i cant even remember who j-kash is or if i ever met him??? and i wes at nearly every day of the sessions for that album (and filmed a lot of it...) But i dont doubt the story - i didnt witness it though
therefore i assume that didnt happen at the Village Recorder, but rather wherever Rivers may have been writing
theres almost no way Rivers would accept a co-write with someone who didnt actually contribute anything, so it must have been at least the title
maybe i was sitting next to whoever told the story or something? without more context my memory is serving up nothing

dylan (HMC):

Karl: ok then! well, i cannot for the life of me recall why i said "as i understand it", but maybe that was how RC related it to me or something (or second hand - RC to Pat to me or something). I definitely didnt witness the event itself. And as i haven't met the guy to my knowledge nor witnessed the details, i cant speculate further on the details of his credit. The vague vibe i do recall is he didnt add much and yet got a legit credit. But, sometimes credits are given to compensate for other help, like he might have helped a little bit with several new songs, or gave RC some inspiration, etc.

dilavni.band(.com): what exactly are "cars goof off" and "shit load of dimes"? i'm assuming holy grail material

Karl: haha the Cars stuff was loose/funny covers of a few cars tunes, probably to amuse Ric. shit load of dimes is literally an audio sample of Slim Pickens from "Blazing Saddles", that became a oft-referenced inside joke for a while in the studio

nimrod: are there plans to digitize the old club dump video tapes from 92-93?

dylan (HMC): On that note, what exactly WAS Club Dump? I’ve gleaned that it was some kind of event that they had at The Central, but was there any kind of specific theme or premise to it?

Karl: it was a club that took place weekly in the central (later became the Viper Room), set up and booked by Joe Sib (of Wax, now a comedian), and "Yowsah!" (see the Tales of Weezer zine 17 for more on him...). it was DIY, cheap and usually booked good bands. one of the only places you could get a show that wasnt still infected with the sunset strip/post glam/GnR wannabees world.
im digitizing everything.

September 16, 2023 5:05 PM (#karlification)

Jason B: Was it a separate stage from the central's normal thing? Or just like Joe sib and yowsah produced a show there every week called club dump
Is it a venue or a show, I guess I'm asking
Or BOTH

Karl: it wasnt the venue, that was the Central. it was a produced show, i guess thats the closest thing to describe it. i dont know if thats a thing anymore, but that was fairly common back then. Come to The Dingleberry Club - every thursday at Big Fred's House Of Blan

Karl: re: club dump and club lingerie: the videos they would offer to shoot of your show were only $10 for the vhs and we didnt always do it, such was the $ situation back then

Moony B'deedle: hi karl, pinkerton cats?

Karl: i am into the idea. This should be a proper reissue. (amongst some others of that era). Theres a Manhead person who handles re-issue type stuff, usually for hot topic and spencer etc, but shes a place to start with it. and thanks for the art files, that makes is less complicated

September 29, 2023 10:52 AM (#karlification)

hailey :3: sorry to add onto the pile of questions, but what happened with the corrupted so low recording from the maladroit sessions on weezer.com?

Karl: i honestly do not remember therer being an intention of releasing that one, but this seems to coincide with the flurry of demos we did put up leading to maladroit. Why we didnt just re-upload it if we wanted it out is odd. Whats the source for that info?

hailey :3: not sure of the source but there is a 2kb file floating around

Moony B'deedle: Karl... how could you not tell us about your acting debut... https://youtu.be/AuxnBF9RBnY?si=u3XUOeFToJ8gjMiY

Karl: because my actual acting debut was in "Say It Aint So"

Moony B'deedle: Hi Karl, could we possibly get a list of contributing artists for the indie rock road trip? I mean like who did all the art assets along with alec and who made all the little covers that would play on the "radio"

Karl: Alec did like everything. There was a company what built the videos but they used Alecs images and pre-made animations, and cut them together as needed, and added effects as needed. as for the audio covers on the radio intro, that was all a guy/his team that was hired as a music director, who helped organize the show into "sections" to tell a story. I asked if they did full versions and was told no, just the short clips used in the intro.

Moony B'deedle: Did alec just make assets and they turned those into the videos or did alec do actual whole pieces?

Karl: he did do a museums worth of art and dont worry, Alec and I have a plan
