Appearances

Overview

"Autopilot" was originally written by Rivers Cuomo for the 2007 demo compilation Deliverance at Hand!. The song features a bridge written to resemble a form of the BASIC programming language.

The song was recorded with Rick Rubin during the sessions for the band's eponymous 2008 album (The Red Album). The song's title first became known to fans upon that album's release via the deluxe edition's liner note booklet, which features scans of handwritten notes made during the album's recording sessions, including "Autopilot", accompanied by the note: "Love it!!!"

The song received further work in 2009 or 2010 with producer Shawn Everett. This version was later released on 2010's Death to False Metal. Cuomo's original demo appeared on the digital compilation Alone X: The Red-Raditude-Hurley Years, released on November 22, 2020.

Lyrics

Death to False Metal liner notes lyric sheet

When I wake at the break of the morning
I ingest my two fried eggs
If a grain of the salt is missing
Then I go to the store and beg

Autopilot, whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh, yeah-yeah
I've got to get off the autopilot
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh, yeah-yeah
It's pissin' me off

When I walk to the park with my doggies
I collect all the things they leave
Then I put them up under the microscope
And I'm so impressed by what I see

Autopilot, whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh, yeah-yeah
I've got to get off the autopilot
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh, yeah-yeah
It's pissin' me off

There is passion in my heartache
Though I'm trained to stay in this state, this state
Ain't no matter how hard I try, I try
I will be here until I die, I die

10 INPUT "What is your name?"
20 PRINT "Hello"
30 REM
40 INPUT "How much cash do you want?"
50 FOR I = 1 TO N
60 PRINT S$ & REM
70 INPUT "go to the end"
80 IF (A$ = "be my friend") THEN PRINT
"Bad Command"

Autopilot, whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh, yeah-yeah
I've got to get off the autopilot
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh, yeah-yeah
It's pissin' me off
The autopilot
The autopilot
The autopilot
The autopilot
