Today in Weezer History: 11/07/2001 - Weezer plays the Viper Room as Goat Punishment. Goat Punishment was a band name created to disguise small shows in Los Angeles, so that only the hardcore fans in the know would figure out it was really Weezer, and so Weezer could try out new material. This started with a pair of shows in late 1998-early 1999, doing an all Oasis cover show, and an all Nirvana cover show. By 2000 the name was used to do some secret shows, and 300 Goat Punishment t-shirts were printed up using artwork that Karl made by modifying the =w= logo and the original fan art that was made back in the '90s of the 4 cartoon heads (There are 3 versions of that shirt depending on who was the bassist, but there is only a Mikey Goat Punishment shirt.) (There are at least 2 bootleg GP shirts as well, distinguishable for their poorly reproduced cartoon art.). in Fall 2001, the name was used again with Scott for a show in October that was shot for HBO Reverb, and then 3 similar shows at the Viper Room. Our lighting guy Dan Hadley was tasked with making a GP light on zero budget, and achieved it perfectly with cardboard and Christmas lights. He still has the sign in his garage in case its ever needed again. These Viper Room shows were recorded with varying success, only the 3rd show on 11/8 produced something usable, with an mp3 of "My Weakness" later released on weezer.com. Tonight, Pat Wilson's The Special Goodness and AM Radio played as opening acts.
