Appearances

Overview

"Modern Dukes" is considered one of the "Summer Songs of 2000," a group of songs debuted live during Weezer's summer tour following a nearly three-year hiatus. The song is first known to have been demoed by Weezer at Cole Rehearsal Studios in Los Angeles in July of 2000,[2] and was also demoed at shows and soundchecks during that same month. The song is not known to have been subsequently considered for the band's planned third album, but did appear on the semi-"official" Summer Songs 2000 album curated by Rivers Cuomo and released to fans in November of 2001.

"Modern Dukes" was briefly revisited, featuring new verses, beginning in March of 2002, during early sessions for Weezer's planned fifth album, and was performed live at various concerts through late May of that year. The song was performed for the last time, to date, at a secret show in November of 2002 at the Hotel Café in Los Angeles.

Lyrics

2000

Every time that I turn around
I just hear the same old thing
Jerks are tryin' to ride my back
To the place I could be king

I'm an asshole, storm the castle
Burn the bridges down to the ground
Take no prisoners, we're just visitors
We don't care about anything

And that's the way we modern dukes will things
It's every man here for himself

Every time that I turn around
I just hear the same old crap
Chicks are tryin' to grease the wheels
So that they can get paid back

I'm an asshole, storm the castle
Burn the bridges down to the ground
Take no prisoners, we're just visitors
We don't care about anything

That's the way we modern dukes will things
It's every man here for himself

I'm an asshole, storm the castle
Burn the bridges down to the ground
Take no prisoners, we're just visitors
We don't care about anything

July 2, 2002

Every time that I turn around
I just hear the same old thing
Jerks are tryin' to ride my back
To the place I could be king

I'm an asshole, storm the castle
Burn the bridges down to the ground
Take no prisoners, we're just visitors
We don't care about anything

Can we move along to the courts
Where our minds are suited best?
??? force our way
To the top of all the rest

Give me some room, let me help you
That's the captain drinking the blood
It's so easy; we can breathe free
Strung together, tougher than all

That's the way we modern dukes will things
It's every man here for himself
For himself

Give me some room, let me help you
That's the captain drinking the blood
It's so easy; we can breathe free
Strung together, tougher than all

And that's the way we modern dukes will things
It's every man here for himself
For himself, for himself
For himself, for himself
For himself
