"I Need Some of That" is the fourth track and third single from Van Weezer. It was released on April 21, 2021. Prior to its release as a Weezer song, it appeared under the title "風吹けば" (Kaze fukeba, "When the Wind Blows"), as the fifth track on the 2017 album ニマイメ (Nimaime) by Scott & Rivers.

Overview

The song was originally co-written by Rivers Cuomo with Josh Alexander and Billy Steinberg prior to the release of Weezer's 2010 album Hurley[1][2] and demoed in English as "I Need Some of That". The song was seen written in Ric Ocasek's notebook in a video posted to Cuomo's Instagram [3] during the making of Everything Will Be Alright in the End, but did not appear on the final album. Fans who heard this early iteration of the song during listening parties at the time corroborated that Ric Ocasek provided vocals on the track.[4] A clip of Ocasek singing a verse of the song ("I'm going to take my bicycle pump...") was recorded during EWBAITE sessions in 2014. Cuomo stated in an interview, "It was going to be on Van Weezer but, sadly, at the last minute, we couldn’t get clearance from his record company."[5] Despite this, the song appears as an unlisted track on some vinyl pressings of Van Weezer, along with the song "I've Thrown It All Away."

The song was later rewritten in Japanese, with additional songwriting assistance from Scott Murphy, and released under the title "風吹けば" on Scott & Rivers' second album, ニマイメ (Nimaime) in 2017.

On April 30, 2020 the June 2020 issue of the magazine Guitar Player appeared online and confirmed "I Need Some of That" as a Van Weezer track:
Similar hard-rock references abound throughout Van Weezer, including the note-for-note cribbing of Randy Rhoads' iconic riff from Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train" in "Blue Dream," the fist-pumping solo that highlights "She Needs Me" and the bombastic drum salvo that opens "I Need Some of That." which is itself a note-perfect re-creation of the beat that kicks off Quiet Riot's 1983 hesher anthem "Metal Health (Bang Your Head)."

Rivers Cuomo previously confirmed in a 2001 interview that seeing friends of his performing "Metal Health" by Quiet Riot during his 8th-grade graduation party inspired him to learn to play guitar [6].

The version of the song on Van Weezer features additional writing credits for Tim Pagnotta (who also co-wrote "The End of the Game"), Geoff Downes (of the Buggles, Yes, and Asia), and Buck Dharma of Blue Öyster Cult. The Van Weezer recording of the song also includes additional vocals from Ric Ocasek, Charlie Brand, and producer Suzy Shinn. The last 30 seconds is a conversation between Karl Koch, Ric Ocasek, and Rivers from the recording sessions for the Blue Album.[7]

Lyrics

Van Weezer

Summertime
I press rewind
And go back to a simple place
When I was just
A little punk
Daydreaming of my escape
Listening to Aerosmith
Later on I will call my mom
Now I'm plugging in to a Marshall stack
I can be anything I want

I need some of that
It’s just what I need
I need some of that
We'll be riding our ten-speeds
I need some of that
Even if we blow up
We're never gonna grow up
This is where it's at

I’ve been around
Around the world
And I’ve seen all kinds of hoods
But this is mine
It’s dear to me
‘Cause here I’m understood

'Cause I need some of that
Don't ever leave me
I need some of that
There's nothing on tv
I need some of that
Even if we blow up
We're never gonna grow up
This is where it's at

Even when the sun was fading
I was in my hatchback ragin’
Riding up and down this block
‘Cause I owned this block

I need some of that
It’s just what I need
I need some of that
We'll be riding our ten-speeds
Even if we blow up
We're never gonna grow up
‘Cause this is where it's at

I need some of that
Shake it up baby
I need some of that
Driving me crazy
I need some of that
Even if we blow up
We're never gonna grow up
‘Cause I need some of that

2014 version[8]

[CUOMO:]
The girl with the umbrella on a bicycle
Rode by my window today
I watched her for, as long as I could
Until she rode away
Now I can't forget that girl
Or get her out of my mind
She was fair, with auburn hair
I think you know the kind

I need some of that
It's just what I need
I need some of that
She was riding her 10 speed
I need some of that
With her long-hair flowing
And her way of knowing
She is where it's at

[OCASEK:]
I'm going to take my bicycle pump
And stand out in the street
And if that girl's tire is flat
She'll say I need some of that

[CUOMO AND OCASEK:]
I need some of that
Shake it up baby
I need some of that
Driving me crazy

[CUOMO:]
With her long hair flowing
And her way of knowing
She is where it's at

When I lie in bed at night
I wonder where she sleeps
When I see the morning light
I stand out in the street

[OCASEK AND (CUOMO):]
It's just what I need (I need some of that)
She was riding her ten speed (I need some of that)

With her long hair flowing
And her way of knowing
She is where it's at

"風吹けば"

Riding on a bike in a bikini
There she goes by
I kept gazing until the shape of her disappeared

It scorches the eyes
The light brown skin
That shining blonde hair
That's the kind of girl she is

When the wind blows, just that alone
When the wind blows, time sweeps away
When the wind blows, with your hair waving, with your skin showing you were there

With a ring in one hand
In the usual place
When you pass by
I'll kneel down

When the wind blows, leave it be
When the wind blows, turn this way
When the wind blows, hair waving, skin showing, you were there

Where are you
Under the moonlit sky
When tomorrow breaks through
I'll be waiting for you
