Overview

Songs from the Black Hole morphed into Pinkerton, which maintained an emphasis on personal, dramatic narrative and symphonic development, along the lines of Puccini. After that album came out, I started looking for a new, more minimalistic, less personal style.

One of the first things I tried was fantasy based songs--imagining a Romantic, flowery, tragic, and/or mystical setting and then describing it with words and music. That's how I wrote "Lover in the Snow", with lines like "deep in the shady glen."

I was amazed that this song seemed to be just as powerful and emotional as my personal songs, even though it was all fantasy, an imagined experience that never happened.
- Rivers Cuomo, Alone: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo, liner notes

At the time of writing "Lover in the Snow", Cuomo was interested in pursuing a potential side-project, tentatively dubbed "Lovely."[1] Described by Cuomo as a "reaction to the reaction to Pinkerton", the music of Lovely would utilize more minimalist song structures and chord progressions, in contrast to the use of numerous chords and key changes of Pinkerton.

"Lover in the Snow" was recorded by Cuomo at his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the winter of 1997/1998.[2] It was first leaked by Cuomo on the Rivers Correspondence Board in 2002. The song was hosted on his website, riverscuomo.com, for a period of time after this. In 2007, the song was officially released (in an edited form), on the compilation Alone: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo. The edit shortened the original demo. The digital demo bundle Alone VI: The Black Room included the original, unedited recording (the same demo released in 2002).

On March 19, 2008, a music video for "Lover in the Snow" was released via Cuomo's MySpace page. The video features a foreword in which Cuomo explains his history with the sport of soccer, and includes footage of himself training for and participating in Mia Hamm and Nomar Garciaparra Celebrity Soccer Challenge in January 2008. The video was directed by Karl Koch.

"Lover in the Snow" was performed by Cuomo with fans at Fingerprints record store in Long Beach, California on November 25, 2008. This performance was featured on the DVD release of Not Alone: Rivers Cuomo & Friends Live at Fingerprints in 2009.

Lyrics

I wanna know
What were you doing with my friend?
Out in the eve
Deep in the shady glen I saw you
Lying with him
Down in the snow
Letting him do
All of the things that he wants to

What does he do
What does he do to you that's so nice?
And how does it feel
When he takes your hand and kisses it twice?
Lying with you
Down in the snow
Letting him do
All of the things that he wants to

(Come on, come on, come on I feel it)
So, you laugh and play around
(Come on, come on, come on I see it)
You fall and hit the ground
(Come on, come on, come on I feel it)
You think I'll never know
(Come on, come on, come on I see it)
Your lover in the snow

Letting him fill you up with his wine
Letting him flatter you with his line
Letting him put you down on the snow
Taking him in and letting me go
It hurts for me to see you so
And I can't take you back no more
Lover in the snow

Come on, come on, come on I feel it

I wanna know
What were you doing with my friend?
Out in the eve
Deep in the shady glen I saw you
(Come on, come on, come on I feel it)
You laugh and play around
(Come on, come on, come on I see it)
You fall and hit the ground
(Come on, come on, come on I feel it)
You think I'll never know
(Come on, come on, come on I see it)
Your lover in the snow

Letting him fill you up with his wine
Letting him flatter you with his line
Letting him put you down on the snow
Taking him in and letting me go
(Come on, come on, come on)
It hurts for me to see you so
(Come on, come on, come on)
And I can't take you back no more
(Come on, come on, come on)
Lover in the snow

(Come on, come on, come on I feel it)

(Come on, come on, come on I see it)
You fall and hit the ground
