Ryen Eden Slegr (born April 14, 1979 in Ithaca, New York) is a musician.
Biography
Ryen is best known as a guitarist, vocalist, and founding member of the California rock band Ozma. Slegr graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles with a degree in history. He also studied Japanese court music called Gagaku at UCLA and took various music classes at Pasadena City College, including Spud Murphy's Equal Interval System. After Ozma's split in 2004, Ryen along with Jose Galvez helped form the band Yes Dear. In 2012, Slegr played guitar and keyboards for Rachel Haden at several shows in Los Angeles and San Francisco in a band with Adam Phaler of Jawbreaker and Warren Defever of His Name is Alive.[1] He has also performed as a member of the band the Rentals, and is credited, alongside Ozma member Daniel Brummel, with co-writing the Weezer song "Eulogy for a Rock Band". Ryen has often been active on Ozma fansites, choosing the name "machatte" on the Ozma Fan Forums, and the name "ozmasoundings" on the Ozma discord server.
Equipment
Ryen's main Japanese Fender Tele 50's Reissue is named Keiko, and his G&L guitar is named Gina Lavine.[2]
Collaborations with Weezer/Rivers Cuomo
- In 2009, Ryen was slated to perform with Weezer on their 2009 Bleezer Tour, though it did not pan out.[3] [4]
- Credited co-writer on the song "Eulogy for a Rock Band" from Weezer's 2014 album Everything Will Be Alright in the End alongside Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo and Ozma member Daniel Brummel.
- Ryen helped play guitar during a live acoustic rendition of "Eulogy for a Rock Band" in 2014.[5] [6]
- Songs from the sessions in which Brummel and Slegr demoed with Cuomo were released in December of 2020 as Weezma: Daniel, Ryen & Rivers
