Overview
Devotion was initially recorded in July 1994 as a demo in the garage, twice, once as "proto-devotion". It later resurfaced, intended for "Songs from the Black Hole." When that concept was abandoned in favor of the Puccini-inspired end result, the song was lost in the shuffle and not chosen for inclusion on the album. The band did record it during the album's sessions, however, and issued it as a B-side for retail editions of "El Scorcho."
"Devotion" is one of the slowest songs Weezer recorded in this early 90s period. The lyrics express fondness of a platonic nature giving way to romantic love. The last line of the song's first stanza is direct quote from KISS's 1977 song "All American Man," from Alive II.
The song was played live for the first time since 1997 during the Memories Tour shows in Japan in 2011.
"Devotion" is in the key of Bb major for the majority of the song, but modulates Bb minor for the guitar solo.

Lyrics
Suddenly our shortcomings
Don't seem to matter that much
Your IQ is twenty points low
And I'm no six-foot hot look all-American man
Sad to say
I pushed you away
Waiting for Mrs Right
You never gave up devotion
Waiting for me
You'll always be my girlfriend
I too
Waiting for you
I'll always be your friend
I commend your stubborness
Without it we'd never got this far
I am done with perfection
Chasing her leaves me with nothing but pain
Unlike you
She isn't true
She's got her own concerns
You never gave up devotion
Waiting for me
you'll always be my girlfriend
I too
Waiting for you
I'll always be your friend
Devotion
Waiting for me
You'll always be my girlfriend
I too
Waiting for you
I'll always be your friend
