The verse melody for "Francesca" was written in 1997, in the form of the song sketch "Listen to Your Heart." Cuomo mentioned the song title "Francesca" to users of the website Riverchat on April 7, 2021, indicating that it was planned for the autumn-themed segment of Weezer's forthcoming 2022 album project, SZNZ. Said Cuomo, "this song in fall called francesca is so amazing."

In July of 2021, Rivers mentioned on Riverchat he was studying the life of Napoleon Bonaparte. When speaking of a song he was writing from the point of view of a letter from Napoleon to Josephine where Napoleon is "paranoid they've been shut out of paradise," Rivers confirmed the song was Francesca.
